Little hope for surviving miners
PAKISTAN: The death toll in Baluchistan province from a mine explosion rose to 21 today.
A senior official said there was little chance of survival for the 31 men still trapped.
Poisonous methane gas was hampering rescue workers, who have been trying to save the men since an explosion early on Sunday caused the mine to collapse.
“We are trying our best to rescue as many workers as we can, but the chance of finding survivors is bleak now,” said Iftikhar Ahmed, a top mine inspector.
Many of the dead found so far suffocated from the gas.

Crews free miners from cave-in
Colombia: Emergency crews rescued eight miners on Tuesday who had spent six hours trapped in a caved-in coalmine near Cali.
Local Red Cross chief Alfonso Vargas said that all the miners were alive and in good condition.
Mr Vargas said the cause of the accident at the Loma Gorda mine remains unknown, but strong rains have fallen on the region and could have contributed to the collapse.
