Seven New Orleans police officers indicted for post-Katrina killings

5 January 2007

Seven New Orleans police officers were indicted by a grand jury December 28 on charges of murder and attempted murder for shooting six unarmed refugees as they attempted to cross a bridge to dry ground following Hurricane Katrina.

The cops are also accused in three separate lawsuits of killing two and wounding four citizens in the unprovoked attack on the eastside Danziger Bridge on September 4, 2005, six days after Katrina devastated the city.

One of those killed was a 40-year-old mentally disabled man; the other was a high school senior who had been separated from his family.

Wounded were the mentally handicapped man’s older brother, and four members of another family.

The officers were booked Tuesday in the midst of a police-sponsored rally that was widely covered by the media, where they were hailed as “heroes.”

In the January 2 New Orleans Times Picayune, local NAACP branch president Danatus King noted that the public round of applause by the police for accused murderers would almost certainly have a chilling effect on potential testimony from witnesses in the current cases and in the future.

State Farm liable in Katrina case, judge rules

Insurer must cover claim in case that could affect hundreds of other suits

A federal judge ruled against an insurance company Thursday in a Hurricane Katrina damage case that could give a boost to hundreds of other homeowner lawsuits against insurers for refusing to cover billions of dollars in storm damage.

U.S. District Judge L.T. Senter Jr. ruled that State Farm Fire & Casualty Co. is liable for $223,292 in damage caused by Hurricane Katrina to a Biloxi couple’s home, but left it to a jury to decide whether to award millions of dollars more in punitive damages.

The verdict appeared to surprise everyone in the courtroom. After his directed verdict on the property claim, Senter order a recess, saying it would give attorneys time to get over the shock.

The jury began deliberating the punitive damages Thursday afternoon.
