CLOTHING retailers Burberry faced a backlash over “excessive” executive pay yesterday as a third of shareholders rejected bumper payouts, including £5.4 million for former boss Christopher Bailey.

Burberry chairman Sir John Pearce was asked to explain how the remuneration committee decided to award millions of pounds to Mr Bailey and chief financial officer Julie Brown.

More than 31 per cent rejected the remuneration report at the company’s AGM in London as they said the pay awards were “somewhat excessive.” But Mr Pearce said the committee had acted in the best interests of shareholders and the business.

“It’s not just to do things to be being excessive, for excessive’s sake,” he rambled.
