Rare Dutch Tengmalm’s owl breeding season starting

This is a video of boreal (=Tengmalm’s) owls in Michigan, USA.

After Tengmalm’s owls had been absent from the Netherlands for thirty years, this species bred again in the Netherlands in 2008. Then, two juveniles fledged.

In 2009, there were two nests: one in Gieten and one in Schoonloo, both in Drenthe province. Only in Gieten one juvenile fledged.

This year in Schoonloo, the owl couple is once again in last year’s beech tree.

In Gieten, last year’s nesting tree had to be moved because of corporate sand quarrying. A nest box was put in the tree as well. The male has arrived, and is calling for the female to join him.
