Opposition to Georgia government grows as protesters freed

GEORGIAN authorities have released three protesters who were arrested in demonstrations calling for the resignation of President Mikhail Saakashvili.

The three protesters were detained late on Wednesday, one day after Mr Saakashvili was forced to withdraw claims that he had suppressed a Moscow-backed coup attempt.

Clashes erupted over the jailing of the three activists, who had been arrested on charges of hooliganism and beating a state television reporter.

Scores of protesters rushed to a police station where the trio were being held, after one slipped out a note saying they were beaten and abused by police.

Police armed with truncheons then tried to beat back other stick-wielding demonstrators enraged by Mr Saakashvili‘s handling of last year’s disastrous war with Russia, which gave Moscow effective control over two breakaway provinces.

Opponents have demanded he resign over the war and over allegations of authoritarian rule. He has refused and said he will remain in office through to the end of his term in 2013.
