Wallasea Island Wild Coast in England

Starting in 2008, aided by an innovative partnership with Crossrail to reuse soil excavated from beneath London, the RSPB has been working to restore nearly 670 hectares of arable farmland to the wildlife-rich coastal wetland it once was. Now ten years on in 2018 the remaining 269 hectares is being restored thanks to support from three grant-making trusts: Viridor Credits, Enovert Community Trust, and Banister Charitable Trust. Upon completion this year, the Wallasea Island Wild Coast Project will have transformed an area twice the size of the City of London into a coastal wetland nature reserve – making it the largest habitat restoration project of its kind in Northern Europe, and ensuring a new generation gets to experience our coastal heritage.
