Financial crisis continues

Today, the financial crisis continues.

This video from the USA says about itself:

The World Socialist Web Site interviewed Dwight Smith, director of Isaiah House, an emergency shelter in Santa Ana, California, about the rise in the number of homeless people, especially among the working poor.

From British daily The Guardian:

Speculation intensified last night that Bradford & Bingley’s days as an independent bank were numbered, after its shares were pummelled and its market value fell to £390m, a fall of more than 90% from its peak.

Don’t believe the hype. McCain has not suspended anything.
    – His ads are still on TV.
    – His surrogates are on TV attacking Obama.
    – He is giving campaign speeches and interviews.
    – His campaign offices throughout the country continue to be in full gear.

McCain lied about suspending his campaign. It’s just smoke and mirrors, folks!

But watch Steven Colbert take his cue from McCain by making the ultimate sacrifice for our country – suspending his show to save the economy!!!
    http://blog.indecision2008.com/2008/09/25/the-colbert-report-john-mccain-suspends-his-campaign-so-he-can-fix-the-economy/

So, McCain lied to the nation to rush to D.C. to save the day. He offered an alternative plan. It just so happens that his plan entails more deregulation (what got us into this mess in the first place) and more tax cuts for corporations. There is a phrase for this. Something along the lines of trying to put out a fire by pouring gasoline on it…

KATIE COURIC: And, Bob, I understand that John McCain actually floated an alternative plan. What can you tell us about that?

BOB ORR We’re told at the White House Senator McCain offered an alternative plan that would include fewer regulations and more corporate tax breaks for businesses, kind of a private solution. But we’re also told those ideas angered and surprised Democrats like banking chairman Chris Dodd who now says he thinks the White House summit was more of a political stunt for McCain.

In the meantime, we find out that McCain had not even read the original plan under discussion:

    Transcript:

ANCHOR: As for the massive Wall Street bailout McCain insists it have…
JSM: Oversight that is effective and transparent. We need people like Warren Buffet and Mike Bloomberg and Mitt Romney to have an oversight of this. We can¢t put that responsibility in the hands of one person.
ANCHOR: The crunch question. Would you vote for it as it¢s presently constructed?
JSM: I have not had a chance to see it in writing so I have to examine that.

Of course, politicians do not always have time to read reams and reams of policy papers. So how long exactly was this particular paper? Three pages. That’s right. Three freakin’ pages. But McCain, who left for D.C. wearing a cape, ready to save the world, didn’t have time to read three pages.

Heck, my daughters have to read more than three pages every night as a part of their homework…

Reports from Thursday indicate that the Democrats and the Republicans were ready to agree on a compromise when McCain barged in and derailed the talks. Thanks for saving the day, John! That’s just what we need right now, more self-serving political stunts… Way to put the country first!

Looking ahead, Politico predicts future campaign stunts by John McCain:

    ***
    1. Returns to Vietnam and jails himself.

    2. Offers the post of “vice vice president” to Warren Buffett.

    3. Challenges Obama to suspend campaign so they both can go and personally drill for oil offshore.

    4. Learns to use computer.

    5. Does bombing run over Taliban-controlled tribal areas of Pakistan.

    6. Offers to forgo salary, sell one house.

    7. Sex change operation.

    8. Suspends campaign until Nov. 4, offers to start being president right now.

    9. Sells Alaska to Russia for $700 billion.

    10. Pledges to serve only one term. OK, half a term.

The key to Bush’s plan, of course, is to give hundreds of billions of dollars to billionaires. The Democrats have been working to change the plan so that it helps the middle class. That’s the part that McCain doesn’t like. He wants more deregulation and more tax cuts — more even than Bush!

Let’s take a look at Jon Stewart’s analysis of what both Bush and McCain are up to:

    (Two videos at the link.)

After derailing the negotiations in D.C., it remains to be seen whether or not McCain is going to attend tonight’s debate. (We are still waiting to hear from the debate commissioners as to whether or not they are willing to accept the handwritten excuse note from Johnny’s mom…)

If McCain skips out, it wouldn’t be the first time. He canceled a debate with George W. Bush in 2000:

    (Not a video.)

In the meantime, the moose that keeps on giving, just keeps on giving…

If your local drugstore is out of eye-drops, it is because Sarah Palin does not blink! Watch Sarah as she waxes profound and eloquent under Katie Couric’s savage questioning:

But this clip is even better.
    http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/9/25/141534/323/1003/610224
The transcript is included at the link.

After watching the clip, try humming, to the tune of the Monty Python song, “When Putin reared his ugly head, Sarah Palin never fled!”…

I have to inject a personal note here. I have in-laws in Alaska, and they have always struck me as intelligent people – so I know that there are people with brain cells in that fair state. But I have to wonder, how did Sarah Palin become Governor there? Who voted for her? A bunch of depressed polar bears?

Just think. If Sarah Palin becomes Vice President, she will be one heartbeat away from the presidency. John McCain is 72, and he has had a history of health problems. Vice President Sarah Palin could easily become President Sarah Palin. Think about that for a moment. And if you don’t start banging your head against a wooden surface, then perhaps this country is truly lost…

So you might want to watch this Sarah Palin Disney trailer:

In other news, I’m a star! Well, not really. But I made it into Michael Moore’s new film, Slacker Uprising, which you can download from his website, http://www.michaelmoore.com. At 22:24 in the film, the camera closes in a on a guy wearing a gray sweater. That’s me!

Check this out. John McCain already has an ad out declaring that he has won tonight’s debate. The only problem is that the debate hasn’t happened yet. In fact, until about 30 minutes ago, it wasn’t clear if McCain would show up or not. (It’s a little after 12:00pm on the East Coast and after 9:00am in the West.)

So how does McCain know that he won the debate? Is he a fortune-teller? Does Sarah Palin’s witch-busting pastor need to expel the demons of divination from McCain??

Usually candidates try to downplay their chances, so as to set expectations low. Then any success will be seen as an improvement over the expectations. I guess McCain’s maverick strategy is different…

The whole base of mcnasty’s campaign is lies. Therefore, with that in mind the outcome of the debate is irrelevant. It is just a simple matter of getting the lie out early, and keep repeating it.
