Update: Friday 15 Nov 2013, 15:17

The public prosecutor has demanded a two-month suspended prison sentence for the former leader of the French National Front, Jean-Marie Le Pen, in a discrimination case. Le Pen is on trial because he said about Roma that they “steal like ravens.” According to Le Pen, Roma are thieves “because of their nature”.

The prosecutor also demanded a suspended fine of 10,000 euros. She thinks that the court must take into account the history of Le Pen, who has been convicted often because of discriminatory and racist statements.

Le Pen made his remarks about Roma and stealing last September at a meeting of the National Front. They led to laughter and applause of the audience.

The verdict will be on December 19.

Migrating mandarin duck shot

This is a mandarin duck video.

Translated from the Dutch ornithologists of SOVON:

15/03/2012 – On October 15, 2011 a ringed mandarin duck was shot in Randers, Nordjylland, Denmark. A year earlier, on September 21, 2010, the unfortunate victim had been ringed in Slovakia.

That mandarin ducks are long distance migrants is proven by a message on the site of Frank Majoor. The site contains a report of a juvenile male ringed with ring number 5229255 on 08/10/2005 in Velp (Gelderland province in the Netherlands). That duck was seen again in Arnhem / Velp on 09/25/2005, 15-10-2005, 28.10.2005, 03.08.2006 and 03.12.2006. Then, never again, until its death was reported on 13 September 2008 from Svorksjoen, Sor-Trondelag, Norway. This is 1259 km away from where the bird had been ringed!

World economic crisis, workers fight back

This video from the USA is called RSA Animate – Crises of Capitalism.

By Joseph Kishore in the USA:

Bank of America, the largest US bank and one of the country’s largest employers, announced plans Monday to cut 30,000 jobs by the end of 2013. The news, the largest mass layoff so far this year, is the latest in a series of indications that the disastrous jobs crisis in the United States is worsening.

The cuts amount to about 10 percent of Bank of America’s total workforce and are part of a plan by the company to eliminate about $5 billion in annual costs from its consumer banking operations. Further restructuring in other sectors is also being planned.

There is deep anger among US auto workers over the long-term erosion of wages and living standards and, in particular, the two-tier wage system and temporary employment, which condemn young workers to poverty wages: here.

The crisis of the common European currency and the region’s banking system intensified Monday amid mounting fears that Greece could soon default: here.

Slovakia Defies the Kochs and Cato. Mark Ames, Consortium News: “For the past decade, the people of the small central European nation of Slovakia have suffered under a harsh and corrupt ‘privatization’ scheme devised by the Koch Brothers’ Cato Institute. However, in weekend elections, they defied their oligarchs by voting for a left-of-center ‘populist’ party … The high turnout reflects real suffering for the people of Slovakia that goes well beyond mere cynicism – they’re suffering from real, mass impoverishment, brought on by a decade of brutal free-market reforms”: here.

NATO summit host attacks Iraq war ‘for oil’

From British daily The Morning Star:

PM publicly attacks Iraq invasion

Thursday 22 October 2009

The host of a meeting of NATO war ministers have publicly condemned the illegal 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Slovak Prime Minster Robert Fico used a news conference with NATO secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen to say: “We opposed the mission in Iraq because the use of military force was only motivated by oil.”

Meetings of NATO defence ministers are rarely adversarial and even if differences emerge these are handled by diplomats who almost never allow them to become public.

Mr Fico, an ex-communist who formed the social democratic Smer party in 1999, strongly opposed Bush-era plans to base anti-missile interceptors in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic, saying he saw no need for a missile shield in Europe.

He said that he would not allow any part of the Obama administration’s revamped missile shield plans to be based in Slovakia if he was ever approached.
