A woman who says she saw Prince Andrew at a London nightclub with Jeffrey Epstein’s victim Virginia Roberts remembers the night because she stepped on the Prince’s foot, it has emerged.

Lisa Bloom, the unnamed woman’s lawyer, told a press conference in New York on Wednesday that the woman’s memories of the night in March 2001 were crystal clear. The woman came forwards in December, after Prince Andrew denied on Newsnight ever being at Tramp with Miss Roberts, insisting that he was instead at a Pizza Express in Woking with Princess Beatrice.

Liverpool refuses to fly the union flag for Prince Andrew

LIVERPOOL council has refused to fly the union flag from its buildings to celebrate Prince Andrew’s birthday.

The city’s Labour mayor Joe Anderson confirmed today that Liverpool will not be marking the occasion, despite having received government orders to mark the Duke of York’s 60th birthday on February 19.

However, the order comes in spite of the Queen cancelling the Prince’s formal royal birthday celebrations on the same day.

Mr Anderson said that Liverpool Council will not be obeying the orders: “No, we won’t be doing that.

“I don’t think it would be appropriate.”

In his answer, Mr Anderson also made reference to the growing public anger over Prince Andrew’s seemingly close relationship with convicted sex offender and child sex trafficker billionaire Jeffrey Epstein.

These include allegations that Mr Epstein forced Virginia Giuffre, who was then 17, to have sex with the prince.

The allegations prompted a televised interview between the prince and Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis, which was received so poorly he formally stepped back from his public duties as a member of the royal family.

Earlier this week, messages that Prince Andrew had sent to a friend in 2001 were unearthed in which the prince appears to doubt his alleged victim’s integrity, calling her a “very sick girl.”

Mr Anderson said: “When you look at his behaviour — it wouldn’t be appropriate for us to mark his birthday.”

Labour councillor Roz Gladden added: “I’m not anti-royal, but this man has yet to prove his innocence in regard to his alleged abuse of young women.”

Two anonymous sources told The Daily Beast that the Duke of York let women sit on the thrones in the Throne Room in Buckingham Palace, including the one reserved for his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. No sprinklers in car park inferno

‘CLEARLY the fact that there were no sprinklers had its effect,’ Chief Fire Officer of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Dan Stephens said yesterday.

He was speaking in the wake of an inferno which engulfed a multi-storey car park in Liverpool on New Year’s Eve. The fire in King’s Dock – next to the Liverpool Echo Arena – destroyed all 1,400 cars parked there, as each one became a petrol bomb, igniting neighbouring cars.

The car park was surrounded by blocks of flats which had to be evacuated. Over 80 horses temporarily stabled in the basement also had to be evacuated. It was good fortune and the extremely rapid response of the fire service which prevented injury and death.

The venue was forced to cancel the Liverpool International Horse Show and hundreds were left stranded overnight as many had parked their cars in the car park. Fire chief Stephens emphasised the lack of fire safety measures that were in place.

He said: ‘We would always advocate the use of sprinklers. Had sprinklers been fitted then that may well have suppressed the fire and given us the opportunity to be able to deal with that fire when we had sufficient water, sufficient flow rate to deal with the heat release which was coming from the vehicles involved at the time.

‘As you can see, the car park is open to the elements, it is well ventilated, winter fires are very, very difficult to deal with. Our first responder teams acted very quickly to make an internal attack on the fire, that gave people the opportunity to evacuate.

‘When it was clear to us that we were not going to be able to contain the fire to the second level, we commenced an evacuation of the Liverpool Echo Arena. The Equestrian event had about 4,000 people at that time as well as the horses. That evacuation was conducted successfully by the organisers in conjunction with the police, who then evacuated all the flats that surround the car park. So that was decisive and that rapid action greatly reduced the possibility of injuries.’

Stephen McKenzie independent fire safety consultant said: ‘It is a miracle that no one was injured. The amount of fuel load associated with each car, packed so closely together was immense. It is the perfect storm, where we have a car park at maximum capacity for a local event, with the fire spreading from one car, to the next, to the next. We have over 22,000 fires a year in car parks. This is a broken system in need in urgent review.

‘There is a worrying occurrence, quick on the back of the Manchester tower block fire, the New York High rise fire fatalities and the Grenfell Tower block fire with the tragic loss of 71 persons. So I think 2018 very much needs to have fire safety firmly on everyone’s agenda.”

The fire in the 12-storey apartment building in central Manchester happened on Saturday. Firefighters said that the fire was able to spread across three floors because the balconies were made of wood. Twelve fire crews were called to tackle the blaze on the upper floors of the building in Joiner Street, inside the city’s Northern Quarter, just after 4pm on Saturday. The building was safely evacuated with one person, a 23-year old, taken to hospital for checks after inhaling smoke.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the fire had crept up the side of the building from the ninth floor as external balconies caught alight. It added that no external cladding was blamed for rapidly spreading the flames as was the case in the Grenfell tragedy last June.

At least 14 people were killed and another 21 injured in a fire that swept through a building housing the “1 Above” rooftop bar-restaurant in Mumbai, Indian’s financial centre, late last week. How goldfish make alcohol to survive without oxygen

Scientists at the Universities of Oslo and Liverpool have uncovered the secret behind a goldfish’s remarkable ability to produce alcohol as a way of surviving harsh winters beneath frozen lakes.

Humans and most other vertebrate animals die within a few minutes without oxygen. Yet goldfish and their wild relatives, crucian carp, can survive for days, even months, in oxygen-free water at the bottom of ice-covered ponds.

During this time, the fish are able to convert anaerobically produced lactic acid into ethanol, which then diffuses across their gills into the surrounding water and avoids a dangerous build-up of lactic acid in the body.

The molecular mechanism behind this highly unusual ability, which is unique among vertebrates and more commonly associated with brewer’s yeast, has now been uncovered and is published in the journal Scientific Reports.

The international team has shown that muscles of goldfish and crucian carp contain not just the usual one, but two sets of the proteins normally used to channel carbohydrates towards their breakdown within a cell’s mitochondria — a key step for energy production.

While one set of these proteins appears very similar to that in other species, the second set is strongly activated by the absence of oxygen and shows a mutation that allows channelling of metabolic substrates to ethanol formation outside the mitochondria.

Further genetic analyses suggest that the two sets of proteins arose as part of a whole genome duplication event in a common ancestor of goldfish and crucian carp some 8 million years ago.

Dr Michael Berenbrink, an evolutionary physiologist at the University of Liverpool, said: “During their time in oxygen-free water in ice-covered ponds, which can last for several months in their northern European habitat, blood alcohol concentrations in crucian carp can reach more than 50 mg per 100 millilitres, which is above the drink drive limit in these countries.

“However, this is still a much better situation than filling up with lactic acid, which is the metabolic end product for other vertebrates, including humans, when devoid of oxygen.”

Lead author Dr Cathrine Elisabeth Fagernes, from the University of Oslo, said: “This research emphasises the role of whole genome duplications in the evolution of biological novelty and the adaptation of species to previously inhospitable environments.

“The ethanol production allows the crucian carp to be the only fish species surviving and exploiting these harsh environments, thereby avoiding competition and escaping predation by other fish species with which they normally interact in better oxygenated waters.

“It’s no wonder then that the crucian carp’s cousin the goldfish is arguably one of the most resilient pets under human care.”

The work is the result of a collaboration between scientists at the University of Liverpool, UK, and the University of Oslo, Norway. The work was funded by the Research Council of Norway.

Hillsborough campaigner Prof Phil Scraton has turned down an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list.

The author, who led the Hillsborough Independent Panel‘s research team, said he could not receive an honour in protest “at those who remained unresponsive” to help families and survivors affected by the disaster.

Ninety-six people died following a crush at Hillsborough on 15 April 1989.

In April, an inquest jury concluded the fans were unlawfully killed.

Prof Scraton’s book, Hillsborough: The Truth, is widely accepted as the definitive account of the disaster.

In a statement, he said: “I researched Hillsborough from 1989, publishing reports, articles and the first edition of Hillsborough: The Truth in 1990.

“Until 2009, and despite compelling evidence, successive governments declined to pursue a thorough, independent review of the context, consequences and aftermath of the disaster.

“This changed as a direct result of the families’ and survivors’ brave, persistent campaign.

“It led to the Hillsborough Independent Panel, its ground-breaking findings, new inquests and their crucially significant verdicts.”

Prof Scraton has previously received the Freedom of the City of Liverpool, the Political Studies Association‘s Campaigner of the Year Award and an Honorary Doctorate in Laws from the University of Liverpool “with gratitude and humility”.

But he added: “I headed the Panel’s research team and was a consultant to the families’ lawyers throughout the new inquests.

“I could not receive an honour on the recommendation of those who remained unresponsive to the determined efforts of bereaved families and survivors to secure truth and justice.” …

Prof Scraton acknowledged his decision “might come as a disappointment to some Hillsborough families, survivors and whoever nominated me”.

However, he added: “Finally, I could not accept an honour tied in name to the ‘British Empire’.

“In my scholarship and teaching I remain a strong critic of the historical, cultural and political contexts of imperialism and their international legacy.”

Fresh inquests in April concluded that the 96 football fans who died as a result of a crush at Hillsborough were unlawfully killed,

The jury found that match commander Ch Supt David Duckenfield was “responsible for manslaughter by gross negligence” due to a breach of his duty of care.

Police errors also added to a dangerous situation at the FA Cup semi-final.

After a 27-year campaign by victims’ families, the behaviour of Liverpool fans was exonerated.

The jury found they did not contribute to the danger unfolding at the turnstiles at the Leppings Lane end of Sheffield Wednesday’s ground.

Hillsborough Families sing after unlawful killing conclusion

Ninety-six football fans who died as a result of a crush in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster were unlawfully killed, the inquests have concluded.

The jury decided the match commander [Police] Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield’s actions amounted to “gross negligence” due to a breach of his duty of care to fans.

Families of the victims showed their relief outside court by singing the Liverpool football club anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.

It’s taken 27 long years of acute pain and withering strife, but today the inquests have concluded that 96 Liverpool fans were “unlawfully killed” at Hillsborough on 15th April, 1989.

The jurors determined that the police were guilty of gross negligence by a 7-2 majority, while also ruling that the behaviour of the Liverpool fans did not contribute to the deaths.

The news comes as especially blessed relief to the Hillsborough families and campaigners, who have been relentless in their pursuit of the truth ever since that tragic day. After almost 30 years of lies and smears, it’s over. It took far too long but they’ve finally scaled the mountain. Justice for the 96 at long, long last.

Now, as the world can finally move on, there’s one national newspaper which certainly owes the people of Liverpool an apology…

Don’t hold your breath.

So, police were guilty, this decision says. However, police didn’t work in a vacuüm. They worked in a context of Margaret Thatcher‘s Conservative government, and of the establishment, including Rupert Murdoch and his Sun daily.

The British Crown Prosecution Service will now consider the evidence and decide whether any individual or organisation should face criminal prosecution. Margaret Thatcher is dead, and cannot be prosecuted any more. Some of her ministers are still alive.

Rupert Murdoch is still, sort of, ‘undead’. So, in theory, he might be prosecuted. However, he was not prosecuted for his phone hacking, his burglary, his warmongering, his bribing of police, etc. etc. either. So, unfortunately, I have to say ‘Don’t hold your breath’ as well.

ANTI-FASCISTS in Liverpool are mobilising against a second bid by neonazi group National Action to stage a White Man March in the city.

They plan to humiliate the neonazis as they did on August 15, when 1,000 anti-fascists vastly outnumbered the racists, preventing their march and forcing them to take shelter in the lost luggage room of Lime Street station.

in their second attempt the neonazis will assemble at the pier head on Saturday September 12 at 1pm.

Anti-fascists will be there at noon.

A statement from Merseyside Jewish Representative Council said: “This march does not just affect the Jewish community, it affects all ethnic groups, races and cultures and has no place here in Liverpool or anywhere else in the UK.”

Neo-Nazis have called off a march in Liverpool, amid reports that they were vastly outnumbered by anti-fascist protesters.

The far-right group National Action had planned a ‘White Man March’ through the streets of Liverpool yesterday.

They had claimed that 150 of their supporters would be attending the rally and had written to the local council threatening to unleash “a National Action-packed weekend of ethnically enriched chaos and mayhem” if they were not given permission to march.

However, the Liverpool Echo reports that few members materialised and the group cancelled the event yesterday afternoon.

According to the Anti-Fascist Network, some members of the march were forced to take shelter in a lost property section after being bombarded with missiles.

Mersey Police confirmed that the organisers had made the decision to cancel the event. They said that six people were arrested as a result of unrest at the marches, but it was not yet known whether those involved were marchers or protesters.

Hundreds of locals attended two counter protests staged by campaign groups Unite Against Fascism and the Anti-Fascist Network. They chanted ‘Nazi scum off our streets’ and ‘Master race, you’re having a laugh’.

Liverpool City Mayor Joe Anderson said he was proud of the city’s citizens for taking a stand against the far-right group. He said: “I think the reaction that they [White Man Marchers] got in the city was not unexpected. I think the city is, for me, a city that is proud of its tag that we are called ‘the world in one city’.

“I think whenever the city is bullied or intimidated or threatened we all come together and we stand together.”

Neonazi march to go ahead despite threats of violence

A NEONAZI march on Merseyside will go ahead this weekend because police did not ask the Home Office to block it, officials revealed yesterday.

The “White Man March” arranged by the far-right National Action is planned for tomorrow in Liverpool, even after organisers sent threats of violence to Mayor Joe Anderson for trying to stop their racist rally.

The letter threatened to make the “city go up in flames,” beat up black people and “pay [Mr Anderson] a visit.”

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: “At this stage there are no grounds for the force to make an application to ban this parade and in accordance with the Human Rights Act 1998, the force will facilitate peaceful protest.”

This allowance was made despite the police having seen and “assessed” the threat sent to the mayor.

The Home Office told the Star that “the police have a range of powers to deal with demonstrations” and that they have to apply to have a protest banned — suggesting that the force has not done so.

Councillors, union members, faith groups and local people have vowed to counter the fascists’ hatred and will rally from 11am at William Brown Street, organised by Merseyside Unite Against Fascism.

Paul Jenkins of UAF said: “People have been outraged by recent comments from the fascists directed towards Mr Anderson and to the city of Liverpool.

“The best response we can give is for as many people as possible to outnumber the neonazis and to show them that anti-racists are the majority.”

The Merseyside Jewish Representative Council sent messages of support for the UAF rally, adding that the racist march “has no place here in Liverpool or anywhere else in the UK.”

Neo-Nazis Vandalise Menorah in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham

Neo-Nazis from “National Action” have posted footage on YouTube of themselves vandalising the menorah in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham. West Midlands Police are investigating. National Action has reportedly been viewed by Scotland Yard as a potential threat to national security. Its ‘official strategy’ documents feature photos of a smiling Adolf Hitler and masked activists performing Nazi salutes. The group has previously described itself as “the fascists your nan warned you about.” An investigation by the Daily Mirror reported that National Action was sending its members to paramilitary bootcamps, featuring knife fighting lessons.

Liverpool: Corbyn backs opposition to neonazi pride march

JEREMY CORBYN joined former footballer Howard Gayle and a string of politicians and trade unionists yesterday to oppose a white pride march set to take place in Liverpool this weekend.

Along for the White Man March on Saturday will be the neonazi group National Action, which has already been sending threatening letters to the Mayor Joe Anderson.

In response to Labour politician’s attempts to cancel the event, the group issued a warning that the “city will go up in flames” if the march was stopped. But opposition to the protest grew stronger this week.

Mr Corbyn said he had no doubts that Liverpool would show its unity against racists.

And Unite Against Fascism spokesman Paul Jenkins said: “The best message we can give these fascists is for as many people as possible to join our mobilisation, to outnumber the fascists and to show them that there is no place for nazis in Liverpool.”

Fascists threaten to burn the city if their march is banned

NEOnazis have threatened to send Liverpool “up in flames” next weekend if a racist march planned in the city is stopped.

The fascist National Action group made the threat in a letter exposed on Twitter yesterday by Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson.

It stated: “A few n*****s beaten up, a few cars set on fire and a few shops smashed and your own non-whites will erupt like a volcano.”

The letter concludes: “Only bullets will stop us!”

Mr Anderson released the letter as part of his battle to have next Saturday’s White Man March, which is expected to draw 150 racists from across Europe, banned.

Merseyside Police say they are bound by the Human Rights Act to “facilitate a peaceful march.”

Only Home Secretary Theresa May has the power to stop it going ahead.

The Home Office could not be contacted for comment yesterday, but Ms May is understood to be consulting the police over the letter.
