About

This video is called What Gives the Morpho Butterfly Its Magnificent Blue?

Blogging on animals, peace and war, science, social justice, women’s issues, arts, and much more.

When I started blogging at ModBlog in January 2005, I wrote (and I will repeat it here, to prevent it from going down with, now in 2011, Blogsome):

Dear Kitty,

Welcome, to read the diary as I write.

Like Anne Frank 63 years ago, I am starting something while unable to predict how the world around me will evolve.

I hope this will be a many-sided diary. I hope I will be able to write much on new discoveries on ancient cultures; new poems; new paintings; new scientific discoveries in medicine, the lives of birds, and much more.

However, political and economic power being in the hands where they are now, I fear that I will have to write much on “four more years” of war in Iraq and elsewhere; rich getting richer and poor getting poorer; torture in Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere; environmental destruction by corporations and governments.

Still, I hope that I will also be able to report on people fighting against these phenomena; for a better, more peaceful and just world.

In chaos theory, there is the “butterfly effect“: a butterfly in the Amazon rain forest, flapping its wings, usually does not cause a storm far away, felling mighty trees.

However, in some unusual circumstances, it does.

May there be favourable circumstances for bloggers and others speaking truth to power! “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”, as Muhammad Ali used to say.

So, dear Kitty, see you again!

  8. Hello Petel41

Many thanks for extending the ‘Field of Flowers’ award to my blog. I really appreciate it when the author of a blog as brilliant as ‘DearKitty’ enjoys TheNaturephile enough to offer an award. I won’t be able to accept the award, but please allow me to explain why:

I believe that if a fellow blogger is sufficiently appreciative to extend an award then I owe it to that blogger to reciprocate and fulfil the requirements of the award. But I previously found myself spending so much time that I didn’t actually have on the awards process that I didn’t have time for my own posts. So I decided then that I would not accept awards.

But to show my appreciation I would instead dedicate my next post to the awarder and post a link to their blog. So please don’t misconstrue my reticence as the result of insouciance or ingratitude; that is definitely not the case – I know how much effort people put into the awards, and I do appreciate it when when my blog is nominated.

    Thanks again and best wishes!

    The Naturephile

    • Hi Finn, thanks for your extensive explanation!

I completely understand why you and some other bloggers don’t write extensive posts on awards. All awards are completely voluntary 🙂

Meanwhile, I hope that the nomination has caused a few more people to get to know your fine blog!

      Al best wishes to you!

  21. Hello,
I have recently started a new blog http://everydaypeopleoftheworld.wordpress.com/ and you have been recommended to me as someone who would be excellent to feature.
The aim behind this site as a result is to conduct a short interview with a variety of people to show people throughout the world’s hopes, fears, loves and hates. Who are these 7-billion people who inhabit this rock going round the sun? What do we all have in common? What difficulties can we all face together?
In my simple mind, the more we learn about each other, the more we highlight that we’re all just people then the less chance there is that we’ll turn guns and words of hate upon on another. It’s a simple dream, but we have a lot of people so let’s get started………
If you’d like to feature on the site, then please get in touch via the contact page.’
Do you think this is something you or anyone you know would be interested in? The idea is not for profit in anyway, the simple aim is to break some stigma and stereotypes.
    Many thanks for reading
    Claire Allen

            So the questions are:

            Questions

            Introduce yourself:

Location (give as much detail as you’re comfortable sharing with the world)

What has been your biggest challenge in life so far

What is your biggest achievement to date

What are your hopes for the future:

            What are your biggest fears:

What are your plans for today? (or a typical day)

Is there anything else you’d like to share with the world:

Thank you for taking part, any questions please get in touch. Remember you can share as much/little as you feel comfortable with and I’m happy to edit anything in the future too.

            Thank you,

            Claire

            • Questions, and answers:

Location (give as much detail as you’re comfortable sharing with the world):

I live on the eastern side of a big ocean, where a blackbird often sings.

What has been your biggest challenge in life so far:

To stop wars. Which is impossible on one’s own. Nevertheless, as part of world-wide peace movements, I think we collectively did make a positive impact, though unfortunately not enough yet.

What is your biggest achievement to date:

              Some of my poems.

What are your hopes for the future:

              Peace.

              What are your biggest fears:

              Wars.

What are your plans for today? (or a typical day):

For today, writing some more blog posts, reading a novel by a Norwegian author, and more.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with the world:

Read corporate media critically; especially if they are promoting war.

              Thank you for the questions!
