This 30 July 2020 video says about itself:
US records a coronavirus death every minute as toll tops 150,000
It is getting worse by the day in the United States.
It has the highest number of coronavirus deaths of any nation by far, nearly a quarter of the global tally.
And the three most populous states – California, Texas and Florida – have recorded their highest single-day death tolls.
Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna reports from Washington, DC.
1 DEATH PER MINUTE One person in the United States died about every minute from COVID-19 on Wednesday as the national death toll surpassed 150,000, the highest in the world. The U.S. recorded 1,461 new deaths on Wednesday, the highest one-day increase since 1,484 on May 27. U.S. coronavirus deaths are rising at their fastest rate in two months and have increased by 10,000 in the past 11 days. Nationally, COVID-19 deaths have risen for three weeks in a row. [Reuters]
PENCE MET WITH GROUP BEHIND DISINFO VIDEO Vice President Mike Pence held a quiet meeting this week with a group called America’s Frontline Doctors to discuss the use of the anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19. The meeting came as video of a press conference held by the group was going mega-viral online — propelled by Trump’s retweet — racking up tens of millions of views and leading to a widespread effort by social media companies to remove the video and penalize some people who shared it, including Donald Trump Jr. Research shows hydroxychloroquine is ineffective against the coronavirus. FAUCI SAYS IT AGAIN: HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE ‘NOT EFFECTIVE’ IN TREATING COVID-19 Dr. Anthony Fauci has again stressed the determinations by health officials that hydroxychloroquine is ineffective in combatting the coronavirus after Trump continued to baselessly endorse its use this week. “Hydroxychloroquine is not effective in the treatment of coronavirus disease or COVID-19,” Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said. He cited the results of numerous clinical trials that he said have “consistently” shown this. [HuffPost]
MCCONNELL STALLED, AND NOW UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS ARE EXPIRING Millions of unemployed Americans received their final $600 unemployment payment from the federal government last weekend and things are not looking good for a continuation of the extra benefit past July. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) are nowhere near a deal on the next bill to help the country stumble through the coronavirus pandemic. The House passed a bill preserving the expanded benefits two months ago, but McConnell waited until Monday to unveil a complicated proposal that would take months for some states to implement. MILLIONS OF AMERICANS ARE ABOUT TO BE HOMELESS, AND IT’S PREVENTABLE The federal moratorium on evictions expired last Friday, ending protections for nearly 12 million Americans. This Friday, 25 million people will stop receiving an extra $600 in weekly coronavirus relief in their unemployment benefits. And on Saturday, rent is due for millions of Americans who won’t be able to pay. If Congress doesn’t step in, these people could be evicted come September. All lawmakers need to do is take quick and decisive action by extending the moratorium and additional unemployment benefits as the pandemic crisis continues. But that’s yet to happen. [HuffPost]
