Football and cricket are both being played safely here, but the Adria Tour disaster’s got people nervous about tennis, and, whilst I appreciate that the rates of infection within New York itself are relatively low, it’s understandable that players are nervous about travelling to the US when cases are rising in so many areas.

    It’s the practicalities, as well. Anyone returning from the US to Spain, or to the UK, Austria, Greece or the various other countries where many top players live, will have to self-isolate for two weeks. The quick switch from hard courts to clay courts would be hard enough without that. No-one is going to be able to do well at both the US Open and the French Open.
