United States Republican smears murdered George Floyd

This 31 May 2020 video from the USA says about itself:

Racist Mississippi mayor attacks George Floyd. John Iadarola and Ana Kasparian break it down on The Damage Report.

“A Mississippi [Republican party] mayor is facing serious backlash after posting several comments on social media platforms concerning the death of George Floyd, the Minneapolis man who died in police custody Monday evening after an officer knelt on his neck for several minutes.

In videos of the fatal encounter that quickly went viral, a white police officer was shown sharply pressing his knee into Floyd’s neck while he was handcuffed and not moving on the pavement. Various cries protesting the officer’s conduct can be heard, all of which went ignored.

Floyd, who is black, was suspected of using a forged $20 bill on Monday evening. He could repeatedly be heard crying out, “I can’t breathe”, before he eventually lost consciousness.

The officers involved in the horrific incident were fired on Wednesday, but mayor Hal Marx of Petal, Mississippi, took a different approach, defending their actions.

New coronavirus outbreak in Suriname

This 17 May 2020 video is called French schools return amid apprehension over coronavirus pandemic.

Translated from Dutch NOS radio today:

In Suriname, code red has been announced because of three new coronavirus infections. Schools that were supposed to reopen for students on Monday remain closed longer and domestic air traffic has been shut down.

The new Covid-19 infections have been reported by the Ministry of Health of Suriname. Correspondent Nina Jurna …: “No new infections were added in recent weeks. However, the virus has now flared up again. In Suriname, all alarm bells are already ringing for a few infections, because the country has only 25 to 30 respirators.”

Porous borders

In total Suriname now has 14 coronavirus patients. One of them died. Of the three new contamination cases, one was reported on Tuesday, May 26, and two on Saturday. According to the ministry, the source of all infections is not yet known.

… The infections may come from neighboring French Guiana. “These are porous borders,” said Jurna.

Suriname borders on COVID-19 epicentre Brazil as well.

Restoring wildlife in Ohio, USA

This 25 April 2020 video from the USA says about itself:

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History preserves and protects over 10,000 acres of native habitats in Northeast Ohio. One of the most important parcels of land in this collection is Mentor Marsh. The once-thriving wetland habitat was destroyed in the 1970s by industrial salt-mine tailings, which allowed the invasive reed grass Phragmites australis to take over.

After years of painstaking work, the Museum’s expert naturalists have begun to win the battle against Phragmites as native wildlife makes its comeback. Learn more about this conservation success from the Museum’s Restoration Ecologist, Dr. David Kriska.

Hainan gibbons fight for survival

This 29 May 2020 video says about itself:

There are only around 30 Hainan gibbon individuals left in the world, but conservationists see a potential future for this animal.

In the 1970s, the Hainan gibbon almost went extinct on Hainan island off the southern tip of China. Habitat destruction and poaching brought populations down to a mere 7-9 individuals.

But a new gibbon couple has given hope for the rarest primate in the world. A male and female were recently heard “dueting”, which signifies their relationship is established, experts say.

Footballer Thuram supports anti-George Floyd murder demonstrators

Footballer Marcus Thuram kneels in protest against police brutality in the USA

Translated from Dutch NOS radio today:

A powerful gesture in the Bundesliga [German professional football competition] on Sunday by Marcus Thuram. The attacker of Borussia Mönchengladbach scored and, in protest against police brutality against black Americans, knelt afterwards. In doing so, Thuram expressed his support for the fierce demonstrations currently going on in the USA after the death of George Floyd.

Colin Kaepernick introduced the gesture in 2016 during the United States national anthem as a quarterback in the American football NFL. President Donald Trump later labelled that action as a disrespect for the American flag.

Two goals by Thuram

Thuram – the son of 142-time French international Lilian Thuram – knelt after he scored 2-0 for Gladbach at home in an empty stadium [because of the coronavirus pandemic] just before half-time against 1. FC Union Berlin.

His team won the game 4-1, with the 22-year-old Frenchman also scoring the third Gladbach goal.

COVID-19 danger not over, British parody song

This 31 May 2020 satiric music video from Britain is called Katrina and the Second Waves – Flocking on Sunshine.

It is a parody of the song Walking on Sunshine, by Katrina and the Waves.

It is about people in Britain who think that the COVID-19 pandemic is basically over: because Dominic Cummings, adviser to Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson, violates public health rules against travel. Because Boris Johnson says people should go back working at unsafe non-essential-workplaces, some people think it is supposedly safe to go to crowded beaches; which may cause a second wave of COVID-19 illness.

The video says about itself:

I used to think lockdown was over, now baby I’m sure
And I just can’t wait to spend all day down at Durdle Door
Now every time I check on the guidance, it just says ‘stay alert’
I think that means: try to emerge from your day out unhurt

Now we’re flocking on sunshine, whoa
We’re flocking on sunshine, whoa
We’re flocking on sunshine, whoa
And don’t it feel good!

I used to think lockdown was over, now I know that it’s true
The government’s fucking atrocious, why can’t we be too?
The public loos are closed so I’ll just have to bury my crap
Like a cat
I already did my bit for the NHS when I clapped

Oh yeah
Now we’re flocking on sunshine, whoa
We’re flocking on sunshine, whoa
We’re flocking on sunshine, whoa
And don’t it feel good!
