WHO calls for more coronavirus testing: ‘Test, test, test’
The World Health Organization director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, says he has a simple message to countries on how to deal with the coronavirus outbreak sweeping the globe: ‘Test, test, test’. Speaking during a news conference on Monday he urged countries to test more suspected cases, warning that they ‘cannot fight a fire blindfolded’.
Translated from Dutch NOS radio today:
Governments and health organizations should only use tests for the coronavirus for patients who already have symptoms of Covid-19. Manufacturer Roche makes the call for the commonly used tests, reports Reuters news agency. According to the Swiss corporation, only in this way can the supply of sufficient test supplies be maintained.
Roche’s appeal goes against the advice of the World Health Organization. They called last week to test as much as possible.
In the Netherlands, Roche’s tests are also used to check whether someone is infected with the virus.
Hospitals in the northern Netherlands are testing all their health workers, contrary to the wishes of Roche corporation, and according to WHO rules.
Maybe Roche is scared that tests will happen with non-Roche equipment.
