Cuban doctors to Italian coronavirus pandemic

This 19 March 2020 video says about itself:

A British cruise ship with five confirmed cases on board has docked in Cuba, after it was turned away from multiple ports in the Caribbean.

Cuba allowed the ship in after Barbados, the Bahamas and the United States all refused the captain’s request to come ashore.

The MS Braemar had been stuck at sea for more than a week.

The UK foreign minister thanked the Cuban government for letting passengers disembark – as many on board are British citizens.

Several flights have been chartered to fly them home.

Al Jazeera’s Ed Augustin reports.

Translated from Dutch NOS radio today:

Russia and Cuba come to the rescue in Italy

The Russian army will send medical aid to Italy to fight the coronavirus. That happens after a phone call between Russian President Putin and Italian Prime Minister Conte yesterday. The Russians send mobile disinfection vehicles and specialists to the hardest hit Italian regions.

Cuba sends a unit of 52 doctors and nurses to Lombardy, the worst affected region in Italy. In recent days, the country has also sent health workers to Venezuela, Nicaragua, Jamaica, Suriname and the Caribbean island of Grenada.

Cuba has a history of disaster relief abroad. Since the revolution in 1959, the ‘army of white coats’ has often been deployed in poor countries. Cuban medical personnel have also gone in recent years to Haiti for the outbreak of cholera and to West Africa when Ebola was prevalent there.

A coronavirus is threatening human health. SARS-CoV-2 is highly infectious and can cause severe pneumonia (COVID-19). A team has now found a promising approach to understanding the virus. Using the high-intensity X-ray light from the Berlin synchrotron source BESSY II, they have decoded the 3D architecture of the main protease of SARS-CoV-2. This protein plays a central role in the reproduction of the virus: here.
