United States Keystone pipeline oil spill, again

Translated from Dutch NOS TV today:

Controversial Keystone pipeline leaks over a million liters of oil

The controversial Keystone pipeline in the US state of North Dakota, which environmentalists have been protesting against for years, has leaked 1.4 million liters of oil. It is the second-largest leak since the oil pipeline was put into operation in 2010.

The leak was discovered on Tuesday, after which the pipeline was closed. It is still being worked on. According to a repair company, an area of approximately 2100 square meters has been affected. How it could happen is still unknown.

The thousands of kilometers long Keystone pipeline runs from an oil well in Canada to refineries in the United States. The planned expansion of Keystone [Keystone XL] in particular met with fierce opposition from environmental activists. President Obama postponed the expansion, but in 2017 President Trump gave the green light for the project.

Oil pipeline leaks are more common in the USA. The largest of recent years was in 2013: then 3.1 million liters of oil leaked in North Dakota.

An oil leak in the North Dakota section of the Keystone pipeline has forced a shutdown and the extent of the damage is unknown. RT America’s Alex Mihailovich in Toronto is following this developing story.

The 383,000-gallon leak happened along the existing Keystone pipeline system, not to be confused with the proposed XL pipeline.

  2. The story is still developing. The Keystone Pipeline has burst in North Dakota, spilling more than 383,000 gallons of oil into nearby wetlands.

The Keystone pipeline carries tar sands oil — a particularly dirty mixture of clay, water, and heavy oil. When it spills into wetlands it sinks in, making it virtually impossible to clean up.

We need your help. The company that operates the pipeline, TC Energy Corp (formerly TransCanada), is attempting to brush this under the rug and expand the pipeline to new areas. The Trump administration recently gave the expansion — called Keystone XL — a green light.

There’s still a short window to stop that from happening. In light of the spill, property owners along the planned construction route are preparing lawsuits to block new construction. We need to be throwing up every possible roadblock to the pipeline — we’re asking every LCV member to pitch in to make that possible.

A donor is triple matching every contribution right now — even $5 is enough to make a difference.

We’re turning to our members to make this campaign possible. A donor has agreed to triple match every contribution through the end of the month — please, pitch in today »

This is the fourth time Keystone has spilled large amounts of oil. With each spill, initial estimates were drastically lower than the actual damage — this is bad, and it’s going to get worse.

Lola — I want you to know, this isn’t the only urgent environmental fight we’re up against right now. The EPA just announced it will allow coal companies to leave toxic waste sitting in storage ponds, where it can seep into our groundwater and nearby water bodies. And Trump just pulled the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement.

What happens next is up to the environmental movement. We have a real shot at stopping Keystone XL. We CAN hold the EPA to its mission. We CAN hold ourselves to the promises of the Paris agreement, whether Trump likes it or not. But it will only happen if we organize in a major way, and only if we do it now.

That’s why we’re turning to you, Lola. If everyone reading this email pitched in — even just $5 — we’d blow through our fundraising goal in seconds.

URGENT: Donate today and your contribution will be triple matched »

Thank you — for everything that you do. We’re facing relentless attacks from the Trump administration — but we’ve got a real shot at winning thanks to your support.

  3. this is TERRIBLE news and EXACTLY what should not happen after a massive oil spill. We’ve just learned that the Keystone pipeline is back up and running.

After spilling more than 383,000 gallons of oil (about the size of an Olympic swimming pool) of oil in North Dakota’s wetlands, TC Energy — the company behind the Keystone pipeline — has put the pipeline back in service.

This is the second major spill in just over two years. And the current spill hasn’t even been cleaned up or contained. According to the TC Energy, they have no idea when the current spill cleanup efforts will end.

We have to send a strong message, and we have to do it NOW. The League of Conservation Voters and our 2.1 million members have worked with Indigenous communities and local leaders to stop Keystone before — we need your help to do it again.

This is a massive fight on a massive scale, but our resources are stretched, Lola. We’re asking every LCV member to pitch in — even if it’s just $5.

This is URGENT: Please rush an emergency contribution to the League of Conservation Voters right now. Even $5 will help. We need you in this fight to keep up the pressure against Keystone construction. Every gift will be triple matched »

The Keystone XL pipeline is a carbon-bomb that will transport dirty and dangerous tar sands oil from Canada through the middle of the U.S. to Louisiana. We can’t allow the Keystone pipeline to get fully built. We’re already witnessing negligence and we can only guess the fallout from the devastation a completed pipeline would have on our climate.

That’s why the League of Conservation Voters must mobilize now. Public outrage against the Keystone XL pipeline is building and now is our chance to stop it once and for all.

There is so much on the line right now: Reduced funding for the Interior and EPA departments, Trump’s plan to open logging in the pristine Tongass National Forest, opening drilling in public lands, and Trump trying to pull the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement.

The League of Conservation Voters is front and center in every single one of these fights. We need you with us to win.

Please. Dig deep and make an emergency contribution to LCV today. Even $5 is enough to make a difference. And remember, every contribution will be tripled »

Thank you for all your support.

Lola — this is horrible news: State regulators in North Dakota are reporting that the crude oil spill from the Keystone pipeline has affected almost 10 times the amount of land as first reported.

One of our donors has agreed to put up a triple match so that every gift until the November 30 deadline will go three times as far.

That’s why we’re asking for an emergency contribution to stop the full completion of the Keystone XL pipeline. Can you help? Chip in with a donation today. Even $5 will make a difference »

We have to stop Keystone XL. It’s not just the incredibly dangerous leaks that make this pipeline a disaster — on a lifetime basis, a gallon of gasoline made from tar sands produces about 15% more carbon dioxide emissions than one made from conventional oil. We’re already witnessing the rapid deterioration of our climate. Imagine releasing EVEN MORE carbon into our atmosphere!

But Lola — this isn’t the only urgent environmental crisis we’re up against right now. In the midst of the impeachment fight, the Trump administration is moving quickly to undo bedrock environmental protections. These are the campaigns we’re working on as we speak:

The EPA announced it will allow coal companies to leave toxic waste sitting in storage ponds, where it can leak into our groundwater. Chip in today to fight back »
Trump just officially filed papers to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement, a dangerous decision that will hurt our fight against climate change at home and abroad. Contribute now to make sure state and local governments stay in the agreement »
17 million acres of the Tongass National Forest are at risk of permanent destruction. Make a gift now to tell the Forest Service to protect these public lands »

What happens next is up to LCV members like you, Lola. We have a real shot at stopping Keystone XL. We CAN hold the EPA to its mission. We CAN hold ourselves to the promises of the Paris agreement, whether Trump likes it or not. But it will only happen if we continue our momentum on these critical campaigns.

We need your help to keep it up. The truth is, a campaign like this takes resources we just don’t have right now. We’re need you more than ever.

Thank you, as always, for sticking with us.

    Sincerely,

  5. The story is still developing. The Keystone pipeline recently burst in North Dakota, spilling more than 383,000 gallons of oil into nearby wetlands. This is a total disaster. The pipeline carries tar sands oil — when it spills into wetlands, it’s virtually impossible to clean up.

There’s just been a big update. Key members of Congress are now calling for a federal review of the pipeline. They’re saying the spills raise “serious questions” about the pipeline owner’s management of the line.

The company that operates the pipeline, TC Energy Corp (formerly TransCanada), recently got a green light from the Trump administration to expand the pipeline. The expansion, called Keystone XL, could be completely derailed by a federal review.

This may be our last opportunity to stop Keystone XL. We need to push hard to get this federal review. To pull this campaign off, we’re asking every LCV member to pitch in — even if it’s just $5.

A donor is triple matching every contribution right now. Please, Lola — we need your help.

Stop Keystone XL. Triple your impact. Donate today »

For years, LCV members have spoken out in solidarity with tribal and local communities to successfully stop the Keystone XL pipeline, the Dakota Access pipeline, and numerous other pipelines — and now, it’s more important than ever that we keep up the fight.

Lola — there’s a real chance we can pull this off. TC Energy Corp has been fighting to build Keystone XL for years. Every delay means huge expenses — they can’t afford to keep this fight going forever, especially as clean energy technologies get cheaper every day.

We need your help. This campaign is going to take organizing at a grassroots level, lobbying in Congress, and potentially taking the Trump administration to court.

We need to raise $14,000 by the end of November to keep our work going strong. If everyone reading this right now pitched in just $5, we’d blow through that goal in minutes. Remember — a donor is offering a triple match, so your contribution goes even further than usual if you give today.

Please, triple your impact. If the environmental movement doesn’t turn out in a big way right now, the Keystone XL pipeline expansion could be built. Donate today — even if it’s just $5 »

Lola — Late Friday, the American Petroleum Institute, which lobbies for the biggest oil and gas polluters, sent a letter to the White House pressuring Trump to clear the way for new pipeline projects — fast.

They’re demanding a total gut job on the National Environmental Policy Act — a bedrock environmental law that requires the federal government to study the environmental impacts of projects and consider public input before they can proceed. If the polluters succeed, they will effectively take all the teeth out of the environmental review process.

This is just weeks after the Keystone Pipeline burst in North Dakota, spilling more than 383,000 gallons of oil into nearby wetlands. With impeachment hearings heating up and the scandal of another major spill, oil and gas insiders have realized they may have a shorter window than they thought to stymie science and public input to unfairly tip the scales towards a green light on their projects.

We need to mobilize — fast — before Trump rips these environmental review laws to shreds and paves the way for more pipelines. We need to be throwing up everything to stop Trump now — we’re asking every LCV member to pitch in to make that possible. Even $5 is enough to make a difference. A major donor is triple matching every contribution right now.
