The terrible 10 – candidates for Tory leadership

Ten potential candidates (so far) for the Tory leadership race:

Boris Johnson

The former foreign secretary, known for his controversial comments about the burkha and black people, is considered the favourite to win.

Dominic Raab

The former Brexit secretary said in 2017 that most foodbank users are not “languishing in poverty.”

Andrea Leadsom

The anti-gay marriage wannabe PM quit as Commons leader on Wednesday, stating that she did not believe Theresa May’s plan would lead to a complete withdrawal from the EU.

Michael Gove

The Environment Secretary withdrew his support for Boris Johnson in the previous leadership race before announcing his own candidacy, despite being Mr Johnson’s campaign manager.

Jeremy Hunt

The Foreign Secretary’s policies when health secretary led junior doctors to go on strike in 2016 for the first time.

Penny Mordaunt

The newly appointed first female defence secretary has consistently voted in favour of military involvement overseas.

Sajid Javid

The Home Secretary came under fire earlier this year after questioning whether refugees crossing the Channel were “genuine.”

Rory Stewart

The newly promoted International Development Secretary had overseen record levels of violence in jails while prisons minister.

Matt Hancock

The Health Secretary has been accused of cosying up to tech firms after endorsing a GP app.

James Cleverly

The Conservative Party deputy chairman favours cuts to disability benefits and scrapping the minimum wage.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s resignation announcement as leader of the Conservative Party, effective June 7, will unleash a vicious campaign to replace her. Whoever wins in July—current favourite Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Jeremy Hunt, Dominic Raab or someone now seen as less likely—will steer the government still further to the right: here.

The leadership contest provoked by the imminent resignation of Theresa May threatens the implosion of the Conservative Party.. On Sunday, Samuel Gyimah threw his hat into the ring as the 13th candidate. But aside from the number of challengers, which could yet rise, the central division between them all is how to respond to the crisis wracking British imperialism over exiting the European Union (EU): here.

BORIS Johnson came under fire yesterday for boycotting last night’s Channel 4 debate between the candidates for the Tory party leadership and the position of unelected prime minister: here.

The Tory crisis has reached the stage where Tory ministers have been threatening to ‘bring down’ a Boris Johnson-led government: here.

Johnson’s racist and Islamophobic remarks make him unfit to be PM, anti-racists say: here.

  1. Does it really mather who will be the next PM? With the Conservative party divided and Labour unwilling to support the Brexit Deal nothing will change. There is only one deal. EU will not give another deal. Take it or not but leave! That is what the EU is saying to the UK.

  2. US PRESIDENT Donald Trump has named three of his Tory candidates to replace May as the prime minister of his choice.

All three of Trump’s pick have the necessary qualities to bow down before US capitalism and turn the UK from a vassal state of the EU into nothing more than a vassal state of the USA, opened up to exploitation by the giant US conglomerates in the cause of ‘making America great’.

First on Trump’s list is Boris Johnson, who can always be relied upon to crawl before the might of US imperialism. Last week, Trump told the press that Johnson would make a good PM, saying: ‘I think he would be excellent.’

Next up for a private meeting was Jeremy Hunt, with Trump again saying, ‘I think he would do a very good job as Prime Minister.’

In his six years at the Department of Health, Hunt was the driving force behind the Tory attempt to privatise the NHS, making Hunt highly acceptable to Trump who has made it clear that any trade deal with the US will involve the complete destruction of the NHS at the hands of US health corporations.

The third Tory to be blessed by Trump is Michael Gove.

Gove spent years as agricultural minister and agriculture is a particular worry to the Trump administration with US farmers going bust on a massive scale as a result of his trade war with China.

Nothing better for the US agricultural industry than to have a servile UK prime minister who would welcome with open arms the dumping of US agricultural commodities.

All three of Trump’s chosen UK prime ministers share one thing in common – they all represent the spinelessness and weakness of a British capitalist class that is prepared to submit to every diktat from Washington, as it replaces the EU as its master.

Trump intends that the next prime minister of Britain will be chosen by him, and the Tories are falling over themselves to capitulate, while Corbyn was left banging on the door asking to be allowed to be let in on this craven act of subservience.

Trump’s desire to dictate a regime change in the UK is driven not from a position of strength but on the contrary by a world crisis of capitalism that has reached the point of an explosion that will bring down the entire world financial system.

Nothing illustrates the crisis of world capitalism better than the collapse this week of LF Woodford Equity Income Fund.

This fund was forced to stop investors from withdrawing their own money that they had trusted the fund to invest for them. The clamour for their money back came with the realisation that this company was going bust. It then turned out that Woodford didn’t have the cash to repay them their investments.

Woodford’s is not unique. It is a large investment fund that attracted millions from investors out to make a profit from financial dealings and the crash will not stop at Woodford.

This liquidity crisis is rampant throughout the world’s capitalist financial system, the same liquidity crisis that brought the world banking system to the very brink of collapse in 2008.

This crisis is driving US capitalism to wage war to crush its rivals through trade war or turn them into subservient client states of US imperialism.

  6. IN THE TORY leadership campaign, of the six candidates left after the first round of voting five went to Oxford University and every one of those had attended a private school.

Boris Johnson went to Eton and Jeremy Hunt went to the public King’s School in Chester, with both going on to Oxford. The dominance of this ruling elite trained in expensive public schools doesn’t stop at the Tory Party, as a report this week makes clear.

The study, Elitist Britain 2019 by the Sutton Trust and the Social Mobility Commission, showed that a tiny elite of privately educated men and women dominate in every sphere of the political, judicial, military and media in the country.

From this background come 65% of senior judges; 59% of senior civil servants; 57% of the House of Lords. And in the media 44% of columnists in the bourgeois press went to private schools. 39% of the Tory cabinet followed the same direct route into power along with 49% of the senior leaders in the military.

These statistics show that, far from being the impartial components of the state machinery, all these positions are almost the exclusive preserve of public school Oxbridge graduates which in turn are the exclusive domain of the wealthy ruling class, and used to train them to rule over the people.

Occasionally, the odd comprehensive school wannabe Tory is sucked into this elite and provided with a respectable job that raises them above the people and class they came from.
