Trump Continues Trampling On Trans Rights

Trump is continuing his constant assault on transgender rights. Cenk Uygur, John Iadarola, and Nando Vila, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down.

“Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Ben Carson on Thursday sought to clarify his testimony to a House committee about the Trump administration’s plans to alter protections for homeless transgender people.

Lawmakers grilled Carson on Tuesday about whether his department planned to roll back an Obama-era rule ensuring homeless transgender people are allowed to stay in single-sex shelters that match their gender identity.

Carson told members of the House Financial Services Committee that he is “not currently anticipating changing” the Equal Access Rule. But one day later, HUD unveiled a proposed rule that would allow federally funded shelters to consider “privacy, safety, practical concerns, religious beliefs” in deciding to admit a person, a change that critics say could result in discrimination against transgender people.”

ARIZONA BILL WOULD BAN TRANS WOMEN FROM SPORTS TEAMS Transgender girls and women would be barred from participating in sports on the team that aligns with their gender identity under a proposed Arizona law. GOP Rep. Nancy Barton’s proposal is co-sponsored by 22 Republican House members, and is the latest on a list of over a dozen states with bills focusing on transgender young people. [AP]

A report released this week by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) chronicles a drastic rise in homelessness in the Los Angeles area over the last year. In 2019, the homeless population of the city increased by 16 percent to 36,000, while the homeless population of the county increased by 12 percent to 59,000. The figures in the report contradict the official narrative that the economy has recovered and that the working class is, despite this or that issue, faring well: here.
