Wales – ‘Red Kite Country’ – is the perfect place for these fine birds. However they were introduced in the Chilterns in the 1980s and have spread massively over southern England. They’ve even reached Dorset in the last five years… and actually they are a bit of a pain in large numbers. They have learned bin-raiding in the populous south, rather than hunting in pairs over a defined territory in the wilds. It must have seemed a good idea at the time…
