An alleged Australian gunman was involved in the mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, which left multiple dead.

The alleged gunman has been identified as Brenton Tarrant, who has family in Grafton in New South Wales and is believed to have been living in New Zealand.

New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush said in a press conference a total of four people were in custody, three men and one woman.

He also confirmed there were “a number” of improvised explosive devices attached to vehicles. …

Forty people are confirmed to have died so far in the attack, with more than 20 others seriously injured.

UPDATE: New Zealand police commissioner Mike Bush said the death toll in the two mosque attacks has increased to 49, with one man already charged with murder in the wake of the terrorist attacks.

Several hundred people are believed to have been inside the Masjid Al Noor mosque on Deans Avenue when a gunman opened fire at 1.40pm local time (11.40am AEDT).

The nearby Linwood Islamic Centre was also targeted.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the shooting marked one of New Zealand’s “darkest days”. …

“Many of those who will have been directly affected by this shooting may be migrants to New Zealand. They may even be refugees here. They have chosen to make New Zealand their home and it is their home. They are us. The person who has perpetuated this violence against us is not. They have no place in New Zealand.” …

Later today, she said it was clear the incident could “only be described as a terrorist attack“.

In this, Ms Ardern differs to how United States President Trump, similar politicians and much of the corporate media react to similar bloodbaths.

Usually, if a perpetrator is white, he (it usually is a he) then is depicted as a mentally ill isolated individual; avoiding the word ‘terrorist’.

While, if a perpetrator is black and/or Muslim, then his violence is depicted as part of worldwide ‘Islamic terrorism’; also if that perpetrator is mentally ill.

The anti-Semitic and anti-Latin American rhetoric and acts of the Trump administration caused the massacre of Jews in the Pittsburgh synagogue in the USA.

Now, the Islamophobic rhetoric and actions of people like Trump, Geert Wilders in the Netherlands, the Pegida neonazis in Germany, etc. has contributed to this horrible massacre; like it did to earlier Islamophobic terrorism, by Breivik in Norway and others.

Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old  Australian who was a gunman in the New Zealand terror attacks, described himself as an “ordinary white man” who was inspired by Norway mass killer Anders Behring Breivik

Tarrant, who filmed himself attacking a Christchurch mosque in a Facebook Live video, posted a 74-page manifesto …

“I have read the writings of Dylann Roof

the mass murderer of black people in a Charleston, USA church

and many others, but only really took true inspiration from Knight Justiciar Breivik”, he wrote.

According to Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws, Tarrant claimed that with his mass murder he wanted to ‘lower the immigration rates to European countries‘. He started preparing the Christchurch massacre three months ago. His manifesto quotes the neonazi ‘fourteen words’ slogan. Tarrant refers to himself as a ‘racist’ and writes that not only Muslim, but also non-Muslim ‘traitors’ should be killed.

Dutch NOS TV says that the three people arrested along with Tarrant all had weapons with them.

According to New Zealand Prime Minister Ardern, Tarrant’s fellow suspects shared his racist ideology.

This tweet shows the Bangladeshi cricket team was present in the mosque but managed to escape.

The Australian National Imams Council has blamed the attacks on “an environment of increasing Islamophobia” both in Australia and New Zealand.

“It appears that the perpetrator was of Australian origin and linked to a white supremacist group,” the statement said.

“Sadly, persons who carry hatred and rejection in their hearts become more emboldened to act when their Islamophobic views are tolerated and, on occasions, supported and promoted, whether directly or indirectly, by public speakers, politicians and media agencies.

“ANIC believes that our political leaders need to do more to counter Islamophobia, acts of hatred and terrorism against any group. This includes in relation to provocative and divisive speech, which can also contribute to an increase in Islamophobia.”

The ANIC added it was critical that we stand together as a community and oppose all acts and words of hatred, terrorism and violence.

This Dutch tweet on the crime shows a crying kiwi, New Zealand’s national bird.

Dutch NOS TV also writes there was a pro-climate march by thousands of striking students near the mosque bloodbath. Good to hear that they, like the Bangladeshi cricketers, apparently survived the bloodbath. Islamophobes like the Christchurch murderers are very often also both Holocaust denialists and climate change denialists. The Christchurch murderers might consider the pro-climate students ‘commie scum’, supposedly deserving to die as ‘traitors’.
