Activists urge Mariah Carey to cancel her performance in Saudi Arabia

Apple and Google criticized for hosting Saudi “control women app”

Human rights groups have criticized Apple and Google for offering a controversial app developed by the Saudi Ministry of the Interior. With the Absher app, men can follow their wives, sisters or daughters, give permission to travel and receive an SMS if they use their passport at the border.

The app is available in iTunes and Google Play. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch say to the US American news site Insider that the tech giants have to reconsider hosting Absher. The two corporations have not yet responded to the site. …

According to activists, the app is one of the reasons why women trying to flee the country are caught. In Saudi Arabia, women are only allowed to travel with permission from their male guardian, whom they must have according to the law.
