Trump’s State of the Union against the environment

According to a recent report on climate change, one third of the Himalayan ice caps can no longer be rescued putting 2 billion people at risk.

The weather these days is wild and will be wilder still within a century — in part, because the water from melting ice sheets off Greenland and in the Antarctic will cause extreme weather and unpredictable temperatures around the globe. A study published today in Nature is the first to simulate the effects, under current climate policies, that the two melting ice sheets will have on ocean temperatures and circulation patterns as well as on air temperatures by the year 2100: here.

Yesterday, I attended the State of the Union as Representative Paul Tonko’s guest, representing over 3 million LCV members and supporters like you who are committed to fighting the climate crisis. While Trump addressed Congress and the nation, I gritted my teeth as he ignored the threat of climate change, attacked our immigrant communities, and continued to hold the nation hostage over the xenophobic and environmentally destructive border wall.

But I felt the force of the environmental community behind me, and I know that when Trump spews hateful, climate-change denying, and anti-environment rhetoric, he doesn’t speak for us. The overwhelming majority of the nation — including LCV members like you — want strong environmental protections, action to solve the climate crisis, and to stop Trump’s hateful wall.

Trump’s lies don’t stop me from feeling a burning sense of hope — a result of the incredible work by activists like you across the country.
