Brazil’s indigenous population fights back | DW Documentary (Environment documentary)
Xulwi is a Guajajara warrior. He lives on a reservation on the edge of Brazil’s Amazon region where illegal logging is rampant and harmful to the environment.
Illegal loggers in the Amazon region are often heavily armed and far from scared. It can be fatal to get into a spat with them. Over 60 Guajajara warriors have been killed trying to defend the forest. It usually does not help to go to the police. Brazil’s indigenous population feels neglected by the state.
Though two indigenous Brazilians are now in parliament, the community does not have much political influence. But Xulwi and other Guajajara refuse to give up their fight against illegal logging and will continue their resistance. A report by Bianca Kopsch.

Brazilian indigenous peoples rally against Bolsonaro
BRAZIL’S National Indigenous Movement and the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) mounted demonstrations in a number of towns and cities on Thursday in protest at President Jair Bolsonaro’s attack on their land rights.
Demonstrations took place in 22 states. In the capital Brasilia protesters rallied outside the Environment Ministry calling for action against climate change and an end to deforestation.
Mr Bolsonaro’s first act in office was to strip the National Foundation of the Indigenous of its authority to designate indigenous territories and deny corporations permission to log, mine or otherwise exploit them, transferring those powers to the Agriculture Ministry which has close ties to big business.
APIB said the mobilisation demanded “protection of the rights stipulated in the constitution and combatting violence.”
Protesters told reporters that ranching and logging companies were already moving into indigenous land.
