Pro-climate demonstrations in Poland

Thousands Protest at U.N. Climate Summit in Coal-Heavy Poland, Facing Riot Police & Intimidation

This week Democracy Now! is broadcasting from the U.N. climate summit in Katowice, Poland, where the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Russia and Kuwait have blocked language “welcoming” October’s landmark IPCC climate report that warned of the catastrophic effects of a global temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius, beyond which global crises could unfold at a rapid pace. The four countries rejected using the word “welcome”, insisting that members instead “note” the findings of the widely cited U.N. report. We begin our coverage with voices of some of the thousands of climate activists from around the world who marched in Katowice on Saturday, calling for world leaders to do more to keep rising greenhouse gas emissions in check. We also speak with a member of the European Parliament who confronted undercover Polish officials who were monitoring the protest.

“Shame On You!” Protesters Interrupt Trump Admin Promoting Coal & Fossil Fuels at U.N. Climate Talks

Just minutes before we began our Monday broadcast, Democracy Now! spoke to protesters at the U.N. climate summit in Katowice, Poland, as they interrupted a Trump administration event promoting coal and other fossil fuels. We speak with Diné climate activist Leona Morgan.

Delegates from more than 200 countries are meeting in Katowice, Poland, in the annual United Nations ritual to discuss international climate change policy. This year’s conference is the third since the Paris Agreement. Dubbed “Paris 2.0,” it is devoted to working out the implementation details of the 2015 accord. Despite ample evidence that the Paris agreement itself is woefully inadequate, ambitions for Katowice remain low, with no expectation of a new round of more stringent pledges by nations this year. With US President Donald Trump in the process of withdrawing the world’s second largest polluter from Paris (the US remains a participant until at least 2020, the first opportunity for formal withdrawal), the conference is more likely to test the very survival of the agreement. Skepticism or outright opposition to Paris has grown from governments of key countries including Russia, Brazil and Australia: here.

  1. Our Revolution

This week, the world is meeting in Katowice, Poland, the heart of European coal country, with one objective: To save the planet from climate catastrophe.

But the United States’ representatives are trying to drag the discussion in the wrong direction.

We’ve raised the temperature of the planet one degree Celsius already, and it’s not hard to see the effects: withering droughts that lead to horrific wildfires; Biblical rainfalls that leave cities like Houston inundated; ferocious windstorms that do endless damage. And we’re on a track right now to raise the temperature three or four times that much: If we do, there won’t be such a thing as “normal life.”

While the rest of the world is meeting to find a solution, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the American emissaries are doing the bidding of fossil fuel companies desperate to maintain their grip on the global economy, no matter the ultimate cost.

This is why it is so important for us to organize the grassroots to challenge our elected leaders and the established power structures in this country. Young people and climate activists are confronting Democrats in Congress to address climate change with a Green New Deal, but we need to take this action beyond Washington. More than 600 of Our Revolution’s local groups in communities across this country are building the movement. Will you help them take the next step by making a $5 donation to Our Revolution today?

In order for us to take decisive action, we need to challenge big money in politics, entrenched incumbents, and the apathy of the corporate media that runs advertisements for ExxonMobil, Shell, BP, and other big polluters during every commercial break. Our collective success or failure will shape the survival of our planet.

We are bringing change to these institutions, but it is not happening quickly enough. We only have twelve years before climate change that is already driving historic hurricanes, droughts, wildfires, and flooding becomes more devastating than we can even comprehend.

That’s why I’m asking: Will you chip in $5 to build Our Revolution’s grassroots movement across this country to challenge the establishment and carry forward our efforts for a Green New Deal and 100% renewable energy?

Time is short, but if we take action together, we can make the changes necessary to save our planet.

    In solidarity,

    Bill McKibben
