Trump Supports Saudi Arabia Starving The Children Of Yemen
Latest report: 85,000 children under 5 years of age have starved to death in 3 years of war in Yemen. US-supplied weapons, US logistical support, aircraft and endless US-made bombs have enabled Saudi Arabia to both slaughter and starve the population of Yemen.
Translated from Dutch NOS TV today:
More and more countries are stopping arms deliveries to Saudi Arabia. The reason for this is the war in Yemen and the death of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Germany announced a month ago that “in the current situation” no arms deliveries to Saudi Arabia can take place. Norway followed that example already this month and Denmark joined it on Thursday. But does that affect the government of Saudi Arabia?
“They do not lose sleep about that”, says Pieter Wezeman. He works at the Swedish research institute SIPRI and keeps an eye on the arms flows to the Middle East. “Most countries that now stop delivery do not have a large arms industry”, he says. Only Germany is an exception. There are hundreds of millions in that sector there.
In Denmark that is much less. In 2016 and 2017, only a few tens of thousands of euros were produced, says Wezeman. That is why it is not such a problem for Denmark to cancel the arms trade with Saudi Arabia. …
“Moreover, the countries that are speaking out now do not stop all arms exports, only a small part.”
The real big sellers to Saudi Arabia in recent years have been the United States, Great Britain and France. Only when those countries would no longer supply weapons that would really be noticed in the country. “But we have to see if that will happen, the Trump administration does not want to, and the same is true for Great Britain, where the interests are too big.
This is a Dutch graph about the five main countries exporting weapons to Saudi Arabia, in millions of US dollars: the USA, Britain, Germany, France and Canada. Showing the Netherlands as well.
Saudi Arabia has enough money. Can it not set up some weapons factories? “They are already working hard on that”, says Wezeman. “They have big plans for that and they say things are going well, but I doubt that. To give that a chance of success, they are very dependent on technological import.”
Then the country may run into a problem, says Wezeman. “Weapons technology is also covered by arms exports, and if there is a ban on it, then they will not be able to buy a tank, nor the technology to make a tank.”
