In the aftermath of a spate of white supremacist violence from Florida to Kentucky to Pittsburgh, President Trump is ramping up nativism and xenophobia. The U.S. is deploying up to 14,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, purportedly in response to a caravan of Central American asylum seekers. Trump also says he might revoke birthright citizenship for the babies of non-citizens. We are joined by historian Gerald Horne of the University of Houston.

Trump lit the fires of racist and right-wing terror. The president uses the words ‘nationalist’ and ‘globalist’ in exactly the same way as the far-right terrorists carrying out the wave of recent attacks, writes JOHN WOJCIK.

Trump may send 15,000 troops to US-Mexico border

President Trump announced on Wednesday evening he was considering deploying another 10,000 to 15,000 soldiers to the US-Mexico border. This follows the present deployment of 5,000 active-duty soldiers to the region to stop the entry of a migrant caravan as it makes its way through Mexico.

As of press time Trump’s proposal received muted media coverage and was not referenced on the online front page of the New York Times. Democratic politicians have downplayed the significance of the deployment, calling it a “stunt” by Trump to curry favor with his fascistic base one week before the midterm congressional elections.

While there are undoubtedly electoral considerations behind the Trump administration’s moves, the tripling or quadrupling of troop presence on American soil is a further milestone in the attack on democratic rights and the savage war on immigrants. What is being prepared in the southwest United States is an army of occupation, the size of which has not been seen since the border wars of the Mexican Revolution of 1910–20.

She is the Society of Black Alumni presidential professor and professor of history at Johns Hopkins University.

Birthright Citizenship Expert: This is Not a Diversion, Trump Has Pushed Radical Plan For Years

President Trump claimed that he can rewrite the Constitution and end birthright citizenship in the United States in an interview released Tuesday, sparking widespread outrage. Trump told the news outlet Axios that he planned to sign an executive order ending citizenship for children of noncitizens born on U.S. soil.

Civil rights groups, legal experts and politicians on both sides of the aisle are blasting Trump for his comments, including the false claim that the U.S. is the only country with birthright laws. In fact, at least 30 other countries have similar laws, including Canada, Mexico and Cuba. We speak with Martha Jones, author of “Birthright Citizens: A History of Race and Rights in Antebellum America”, about the history of the 14th Amendment.

The Trump administration’s proposal to end birthright citizenship for all people born on United States soil, enshrined in the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, is another milestone in the assault on democratic rights.

With this move, the American oligarchy is repudiating the basic democratic principle upon which the American republic was founded, embodied in the Declaration of Independence’s proclamation that “all men are created equal”. If the American president can, by executive fiat, strike out the 14th Amendment, what is to stop him from overturning the entire Bill of Rights, which guarantees free speech, protection from unreasonable search and seizure, due process, and the right to counsel, among other fundamental protections?

Trump’s proposal, which comes in the final days of the midterm election campaign, is a provocation by the administration and its fascist staffers aimed at whipping up xenophobic sentiments and creating a constituency for a right-wing extra-constitutional movement. Such a movement is deemed necessary to implement Trump’s pro-corporate, pro-war, anti-immigrant agenda.

The impact of rescinding birthright citizenship on the working class and on immigrants would be disastrous. It would place 300,000 infants born in the US to noncitizen parents at risk of detention and deportation each year.

It would produce an underclass of immigrant families afraid to send their children to school, give birth in hospitals, or send their sick children to the doctor’s office. Millions of children would become stateless, lacking citizenship in any country. Slum districts and even walled ghettos with third world, apartheid conditions would become commonplace. …

The Democratic Party and the pro-Democratic corporate media have either supported Trump’s birthright citizenship rescission or deliberately downplayed it.

Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly of Indiana announced yesterday that he was supportive of the repeal of birthright citizenship, while Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri told CNN, “I support the president 100 percent doing what he needs to do to secure the border.” …

Of the 28 editorials and op-eds featured on yesterday’s online editions of the New York Times and Washington Post, just three addressed Trump’s attack on birthright citizenship.

Of those, one Post op-ed by George Conway and Neil Katyal offered the soporific that Trump’s move will “undoubtedly” be stopped by the courts, while the other, by Megan McArdle, defended Trump, claiming it is “offensive lunacy” to say his moves against immigrants have anything to do with fascism or dictatorship. “It is nonsense to argue this way, and the left-wing folks ought to knock it off”, she wrote.

    Trump says the fake news is to entirely to blame for this week’s mass
    murders and pipe bomb mailings. And for once he may have accidently
    said something true.

    Because, hey, Donald, we think we found your fake news . . . and it’s
    mostly on Fox, repeating the non stop lies coming out of your mouth
    word for word. They’ve been wall to wall reporting FALSE stories,
    like about the bogus existential threat of an “invasion” of poor
    asylum seekers who are still 1,000 miles away and may not even make
    it to the Rio Grande, the knee jerk speculation about the mail bombs
    being a false flag attack, etc.

    They even let one whack-a-doodle assert unchallenged that these
    hopeful migrants were infected with a disease that hasn’t existed on
    earth for 30 years.

    It’s all a big, fat lie. All of it. Fake, fake, fake. But yes, it
    does make people (Trump’s supporters) murderously angry, and prompt
    them to act out the violent fantasies he’s been feeding.

    So if fake news is the culprit, one of the biggest culprits must
    therefore be his own dear Fox News, which has whipped Trump’s zombie
    supporters into a frenzy that we knew was turning murderous a long
    time ago. And they are doing this at the behest of Trump himself,
    which has to make him the biggest culprit of all. They’ve been
    invoking hysteria for the purpose of political demagoguery in YOUR
    name, Donald, even as you repeatedly identity the crosshairs targets
    by name and continue to demonize them to the jeers of your mob.

    For three years at his rallies Trump has repeatedly and constantly
    encouraged his mob to fantasize about beating up protesters to the
    point of death. He celebrates a violent criminal assault in Montana
    for which there was an actual conviction. And then someone gets
    sucker punched, and then someone gets run over by a car, and now 11
    are dead in yet another assault weapon mass murder.

    What’s he going to do next, if he loses in the mid term elections,
    tell his murderous mob that they’ve been cheated, and suggest that
    they must now take mortal revenge on an even larger scale? He has
    already ominously insinuated at least once about a so-called Second
    Amendment solution had he lost in the electoral college in 2016.

    Even when Trump is talking about having armed guards everywhere,
    itself a lunatic response to the escalating occurance of assault
    weapon massacres, he is just evoking even more violent fantasies of
    gunning down another human being, like it’s something entertaining to
    take pleasure from. And his mob claps and cheers for that.

    David Hoag, whose own school was shot up earlier this year, said
    something profound the other day, profound in the distilled
    simplicity of its insight. He said, the good guy with a gun thing was
    just trying to sell us TWO guns.

    No, an armed guard at the Jewish temple would not have stopped this.
    Against an assault rifle it just would resulted in a dead armed guard
    too. And anybody capable of thinking clearly knows this. An entire
    SWAT team was required to neutralize this active shooter, who put
    four highly trained policemen in the hospital wounded, as well before
    they finally took him down.

    We categorically reject the NRA solution to the crisis which they
    have themselves created with their recklessly irresponsible gun sale
    pushing. We reject turning our entire country into No Man’s Land
    America, just because any unstable wacko can snap his fingers and get
    his hands on multiple assault rifles, because the next domestic
    terrorist can walk into a gun show for five minutes and walk out like
    Rambo.

    We have bumper stickers for this, you know.
