Trump administration wants to abolish trans people

Today, a new stage in the transphobia of the Donald Trump administration in the USA.

The Trump administration’s proposed scheme to redefine sex as “a biological, immutable condition determined by genitalia at birth” is not just a calculated swipe at trans people. It’s also part of a broader set of efforts to undermine the contributions of feminism and to increase the marginalizing and criminalizing powers of state institutions: here.

  1. Trump is trying to erase trans people and their ability to access health care, housing, education, and more. This is an emergency. According to a draft memo leaked to The New York Times, Trump plans to make federal agencies deny the existence of trans people by using a limited and false definition of gender.1

This attack will harm millions of transgender and gender non-conforming (GNC) people in the United States and we cannot stay silent.

Here are 3 things you can do TODAY to push back on Trump’s immoral attack on trans people:

    1. Tell your member of Congress to pass The Equality Act. There is already a bill in Congress that would codify civil rights protections for transgender and GNC people. If Congress acts now to pass this long overdue bill they can cut off any options the Trump administration has to limit protections by narrowly defining “sex-based discrimination.”

Call your representative and senators at (866) 245-8482, tell them you strongly oppose Trump’s efforts to dehumanize trans and GNC people, and urge them to pass The Equality Act (H.R. 2282 and S. 1006).

    2. Donate to a trans-led organization. Trans-led organizations are leading the fight to stop this inhumane attack and support trans and GNC people as their lives are continually threatened. Here are a few options for groups to support: National Center for Transgender Equality, Sylvia Rivera Law Project, and Trans Lifeline.

    3. Show public solidarity with trans people. Right now, trans and GNC people are being singled out and attacked. To push back, we must say loud and clear: we see you, we support you, and you will never be erased. Can you do that by sharing this graphic made by National Center for Transgender Equality on Facebook or Twitter?

We must do everything we can until transgender and gender non-conforming people have equal rights under the law and equal safety in their daily lives.

Sexist violence targets trans and gender non-conforming people the most.2 Trump’s attempt to deny their existence makes trans and GNC communities’ urgent need for safety even more invisible. Schools, hospitals, and government agencies need to pay more attention to the needs of trans and GNC communities–not less. Gender equality will never be realized until we center the dignity and freedom of trans people.

    Thank you for taking action,

P.S. If you are trans or GNC and you need support today you can call the Trans Lifeline 24/7 at (877) 565-8860.
