This video from the USA says about itself:
Chile’s faith in the Catholic Church withers from child sex abuse revelations
15 June 2018
Pope Francis announced this week he would accept the resignation of three Chilean bishops, in an ongoing scandal that has grown into a national crisis. Nearly 80 Catholic clergy across the country have been accused of sexually abusing minors over decades, and more have been implicated in the coverup. Jeffrey Brown reports from Santiago, Chile.
Translated from Dutch NOS TV today:
Many more abuse cases within Catholic church in Chile
The number of cases of abuse within the Roman Catholic Church in Chile is much larger than expected. The Public Prosecutor announced that there are now 119 investigations. A few weeks ago it was still 38 cases.
According to the public prosecutor, there are suspicions against 167 people, including seven bishops, 96 priests and four deacons. They are said to have abused 178 people or to have covered things up. …
Last year, the accusations of sexual abuse in Chile emerged after Pope Francis had visited the country.
Although the number of abuse cases continues to increase in several countries, the Vatican has not yet come up with a concrete plan of action. For example, no court has been set up where bishops covering up the abuse are being prosecuted, something that Pope Francis had promised earlier.
Catholic Support for War: Another Child Abuse Scandal. The Church cannot condemn child abuse by pedophiles and yet bless the government’s murder of children in its wars, if it wants to be consistent and faithful to Christ, by Brian Terrell.
It seems like the Chilean sex abuse is being treated much differently than the scandal in America. I wonder why.

You mean: differently from the sexual abuse in Pennsylvania, or in other states?

Sort of. But I view it as a nationwide scandal at this point, considering it’s reach.

Probably, in other states there is stil less known than in Pennsylvania.

It is in other states. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles had a major scandal a couple years ago over sexual abuse and cover up of it. The Archbishop of Washington used to be the bishop of Pittsburgh (where he was involved in cover up)…so he’s gone from covering up to having one of the most important positions in American Catholicism. Dioceses in Missouri had similar issues as I recall. As much as it saddens me to say this as a Catholic, this problem is all over the country.

Yes, cases in other states are known, but mostly there have not been as thorough overall investigations as in (part of) Pennsylvania yet.

That’s true. We’ll see if that changes though. One of the questions surrounding the Attorney General race in NY is whether the sex abuse in the Catholic Church in the state should be investigated (and if so, to what extent).
