Chile’s faith in the Catholic Church withers from child sex abuse revelations
15 June 2018
Pope Francis announced this week he would accept the resignation of three Chilean bishops, in an ongoing scandal that has grown into a national crisis. Nearly 80 Catholic clergy across the country have been accused of sexually abusing minors over decades, and more have been implicated in the coverup. Jeffrey Brown reports from Santiago, Chile.
Translated from Dutch NOS TV today:
The number of cases of abuse within the Roman Catholic Church in Chile is much larger than expected. The Public Prosecutor announced that there are now 119 investigations. A few weeks ago it was still 38 cases.
According to the public prosecutor, there are suspicions against 167 people, including seven bishops, 96 priests and four deacons. They are said to have abused 178 people or to have covered things up. …
Although the number of abuse cases continues to increase in several countries, the Vatican has not yet come up with a concrete plan of action. For example, no court has been set up where bishops covering up the abuse are being prosecuted, something that Pope Francis had promised earlier.
