Windrush generation deported to die abroad! Tories and their racist policies must go! TUC must act now!

COME over as a child from the Caribbean to the UK in the 1960s, go to school in the UK, work an entire life time in the UK, raise children in the UK, only then to be told you are not welcome in the UK, and be kicked out of the country – deported to the Caribbean – to live your last days there.

The Home Office has admitted that at least 63 members of the Windrush generation have been treated in this fashion and wrongly deported to the Caribbean. The latest revelations by the Jamaican Foreign Ministry, that three wrongly deported members of the Windrush generation have died in the Caribbean before officials were able to contact them and tell them that they have every right to return to the UK, has deepened the Windrush scandal and the crisis of the Tory government.

Thousands of men, women and their children came over from the Caribbean on boats such as the Empress Windrush ship to work in the NHS and the transport system which at the time was still a nationalised publicly owned service. They were welcomed and urged to stay on to build a new life for themselves in England as they helped rebuild it after the war.

It never occurred to them that they would need to keep their landing cards to prove that they had come to the UK legally. Then, in 2010 the Home Office burned the landing cards, their evidence of their legal arrival.

PM May is responsible, she was Home Secretary at the time. She created a ‘hostile environment’ in which thousands had to prove their right to stay or face deportation, as the UK ruling class had no further use for the ‘rebuilders’.

Meanwhile, private out-sourcing giant Capita is now paid extra money by the Home Office for each and every person they deport. As part of the continuing investigation into the Windrush scandal by the cross-party joint committee on human rights (JCHR), committee chair Harriet Harman wrote to Tory Home Secretary Sajid Javid asking a number of questions on the issue.

Harman asked: ‘Whether any payments from the Home Office to Capita were linked to numbers who left the country voluntarily or were even detained or deported?’ In responding Javid admitted that Capita did indeed operate an ‘outcome-based payment mechanism’ between 2012 and 2016.

So it was a pay-per-removal service that Capita supplied! The firm was paid between £10.58 and £22.63 per person contacted who ‘left the UK voluntarily’.

The committee condemned the Home Office in June after Capita sent two Windrush citizens, who had been living in the UK for about 50 years, to immigration detention centres in order to deport them out of the country. The committee said Paulette Wilson and Anthony Bryan had experienced a ‘total violation of their human rights’.

In the case of Paulette Wilson, she had been in Britain for 50 years when she received a letter informing her that she was an ‘illegal immigrant’ and was going to be removed and sent back to Jamaica, the country she left when she was ten years old and has never visited since.

She spent a week at Yarl’s Wood detention centre before being sent to the immigration removal centre at Heathrow. It was only a last-minute intervention from her MP and a local charity that prevented a forced removal. During her life Paulette actually worked in the House of Commons restaurant overlooking the Thames, serving meals to MPs and parliamentary security staff.

This is the way that the Tory government treat people who have dedicated their entire life working in Britain, only to be told that they are not British and to ‘go back to where you came from’. Apology or not, the Tories ‘hostile environment’ has not gone away in fact it has deepened.

However it has sparked its opposite . . . the entire working class are now extremely hostile towards the government and all of its anti-working class racist policies. At this year’s TUC conference a motion must be put down and acted upon to put an end to this Tory government by calling a general strike to go forward to a workers’ government that will welcome all workers from across the world as part of building a socialist society.

THE deaths of three British citizens who were wrongly deported to the Caribbean bring “shame” on the hostile environment’s “architect” Theresa May and her government, Labour said yesterday. Shadow home secretary Diane Abbott called on the Prime Minister to “personally apologise” for “the latest tragic injustice suffered by our fellow citizens as a direct result of the Tories’ hostile environment”: here.

Deported for refusing a DNA test! – Javid forced to apologise

THE HOME Office has been forced to apologise after people were wrongly deported for refusing to take DNA tests to prove they were entitled to settle in the UK. A Home Office review found there were at least 449 cases where letters had been sent with the demand.

Three different areas have been identified in the last couple of years where people have been sent letters which said that they have to take DNA tests. One was an anti-fraud campaign called Operation Frugal which started back in April 2016, in that 83 letters were sent out to people saying that they had to have DNA letters. 83 subsequently had their applications refused and seven of those had their application refused only because they refused to take this mandatory DNA test.

People were having their applications refused because they did not want to do something which the Home Office was not allowed to ask them to do. The two other areas were: Ghurkas requesting their families try to join their relatives in the UK and those who worked with the British military in Afghanistan. Both groups were sent letters demanding DNA tests.

Tory Home Secretary Javid told the House of Commons that it was ‘unacceptable’ and claimed that the guidance was ‘unclear’. He said: ‘Today I want to take this opportunity to apologise to those affected by this practice. The provision of DNA evidence should always be voluntary and never mandatory.

‘I am determined to get to the bottom of how and why, in some cases, people were compelled to provide DNA in the first place. ‘Across our immigration system, no-one should face a demand to supply DNA evidence and no-one should have been penalised for not providing it.’

He said those affected would be reimbursed and he announced he had set up a task force to investigate any further breaches. The review will be informed by Wendy Williams, who investigated the Windrush scandal.

Meanwhile, a Newcastle family will not be forced to move back to Australia to stay together after the Home Office reversed its earlier decision to deny the father a visa. Following a campaign from the University and College Union (UCU) husband Jeff has been given a residency permit.

Alison Atkinson-Phillips said: ‘I am so grateful to everyone who helped raise the profile of our case. It has been a stressful time, but I am so pleased we can now all get back on with our lives. No one wants to be in a position where they have to choose between their career and their family.’

Jamaican High Commissioner demands halt deportations! End May’s hostile environment by kicking the Tories out!

‘WE MAY very well be deporting people who are entitled to be here,’ the Jamaican High Commissioner said, calling on the UK government to halt deportations to the country until the Home Office has published its investigation into the Windrush scandal.

This is a move which would stop deportation flights of innocent people for years.
Commissioner Seth George Ramocan told relatives of deportees on a recent charter flight to Jamaica that he would be holding talks with his government and the Home Office about the unlawful removal of people who are entitled to be in Britain.

‘If these are people who have lived here since they were children, they have no connection, no relatives, no one to take care of them in Jamaica, then this for me is a human rights matter,’ Ramocan said.

During a meeting at the Jamaican embassy on Thursday, parents, children and partners of those deported, and those who remain at risk of deportation, gave emotional accounts of losing their loved ones and their fears for the future. They described immigration officers arriving before dawn and kicking down doors, before taking family members to immigration removal centres. One woman described spending £22,000 on legal fees without managing to stop the deportation of her husband who had attended primary and secondary school in the UK. Another described a friend, who had also been in Britain since primary school, attempting to kill himself when he learned that he was facing deportation.

The Home Office has admitted that at least 63 members of the Windrush generation have been treated in this fashion and wrongly deported to the Caribbean. Thousands of men, women and their children came over from the Caribbean on boats such as the Empire Windrush to work in the NHS and the transport system, which at the time was still a nationalised, publicly-owned service. They were welcomed and urged to stay on to build a new life for themselves in England as they helped rebuild it after the war.

It never occurred to them that they would need to keep their landing cards to prove that they had come to the UK legally. Then, in 2010 the Home Office burned their landing cards, the evidence of their legal arrival.

PM May is responsible. She was Home Secretary at the time. She created a ‘hostile environment’ in which thousands had to prove their right to stay or face deportation. Despite pious words, government ‘apologies’ and public hand-wringing May’s hostile environment is alive and kicking and as vicious as ever.

The Jamaican High Commissioner was referring to the incident on February 6 when twenty-nine individuals were deported to Jamaica in a move that was described as a ‘slap in the face’ for Britain’s Caribbean community, 10 months after the Windrush scandal broke last April.

David Lammy, the Labour MP for Tottenham, said: ‘Britain stopped deporting British criminals to Australia in 1868. This forced repatriation is a scandal in itself.’ When fifteen activists bravely stopped a deportation flight by chaining themselves together around a Boeing 767 chartered by the Home Office to deport 60 people to Nigeria, Ghana and Sierra Leone, they were branded as ‘terrorists’. The fifteen activists were convicted of a terrorist-related offence and received suspended sentences or community orders.

Meanwhile, those that came over to the UK when they were very young, or have no papers to prove that they have been in the UK all their lives, have been denied free medical treatment on the NHS. In one case, Sylvester Marshall, who had lived in Britain all his life, was denied NHS cancer care. The Royal Marsden hospital only started his long-delayed radiotherapy when the Home Office finally, after a nine-year battle, confirmed his legal right to be in the UK.

The only force that can put a stop to May’s hostile environment once and for good is the working class. An uprising of the working class, in a general strike to bring the May government down is the only way forwards. A workers government, under the banner of revolutionary internationalism, will welcome workers from anywhere in the world to come and live with their families in a socialist Britain.
