Murder for a parking spot, legal in Florida, USA?

This video from the USA says about itself:

‘Stand your ground’ shooter charged with manslaughter

14 August 2018

Michael Drejka, 48, was arrested in the fatal July shooting of Markeis McGlockton, an incident that was caught on video.

By Andrew Gillum in the USA today:

My name is Andrew Gillum, and I’m the Mayor of Tallahassee, and a candidate for governor in Florida.

And the so-called “stand your ground” laws in my state have let vigilantes become the judge, jury and executioner.

After an argument over a parking space, Markeis McGlockton was shot and killed by a white man. His family had to wait nearly a month before his killer was charged — all because of the “stand your ground” law.

Let’s be clear: stand your ground has no place in a civilized society.

This is a license to kill, plain and simple — will you add your name to our petition calling for the repeal of “stand your ground” laws in America?

“Stand your ground” laws allow anyone who feels afraid to murder under the label of “self-defense”. But we know how that works in practice — studies show that it is disproportionately used against people of color.

But we have a chance to make a difference — I just joined community leaders, faith leaders, and some of Markeis McGlockton’s family members at a sit-in in the governor’s office to protest these unjust and racist laws and fight back against one of Trump’s loyalists, Governor Rick Scott. And our protest WORKED — his killer has now been charged with manslaughter. We can change things if we speak up.

Our sit-in worked, and we have the momentum — will you stand with our protest and sign our petition to repeal stand your ground laws today?

Thank you for taking a stand with me.

GILLUM SHOCK WIN SETS UP FLORIDA SHOWDOWN Andrew Gillum has become the first African-American nominee for Florida governor, pulling off an upset win over favorite Gwen Graham and two big-spending businessmen in a crowded Democratic primary field. The Bernie Sanders-backed progressive will face off against Trump-backed Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis. [HuffPost]

DeSantis under fire for saying Florida shouldn’t ‘monkey this up’ by electing Gillum, who is black: here.

FLORIDA MIDTERM FACE OFF IS PERFECT FOR BOTH CAMPS In Ron DeSantis and Andrew Gillum, Florida Republicans and Democrats both got the opponents they wanted. And it’s already turned nasty, with Trump-backed DeSantis telling the state not to “monkey this up” by electing Andrew Gillum, who would be the state’s first African-American governor if elected. [HuffPost]

BLACK FLORIDA CANDIDATE MOCKED BY MINSTREL ROBOCALL A white supremacist website in Idaho sent out a racist robocall against Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum. Speaking in an exaggerated minstrel dialect, an actor pretends to be Gillum, saying: “Well hello there. I is the negro Andrew Gillum, and I be asking you to make me governor of this here state of Florida.” [HuffPost]

  1. Our Revolution

    Linda,

YOU MADE HISTORY! Andrew Gillum just won a nailbiter, five-way race against candidates backed by corporate interests, to take on President Trump’s endorsed nominee in November. Gillum’s people-powered campaign is Florida’s best shot in two decades to flip Florida blue.

This is against ALL the odds, and it’s proof that big organizing beats big money in politics. That’s what we need for November. Pitch in $5 to help Andrew Gillum’s campaign and Our Revolution win this election.

Florida has proved that this is no ordinary campaign. We have a true progressive on the ballot, the first black major party nominee for governor in state history, and he is counting on our support. That is why Senator Bernie Sanders, local groups, and Gillum’s grassroots army got out the vote to put him over the top in this primary.

When Florida voters went to the polls tonight in record numbers, they didn’t just vote for Andrew Gillum, they voted for Medicare for All, a $15 minimum wage, public education, criminal justice reform, the environment, and making Florida a state where everyone thrives. They voted for a political revolution—our revolution.

When people vote, we win. Pitch in $5 right now to help Our Revolution elect Andrew Gillum the next Governor of Florida.

    Let’s keep making history.

  2. Bernie Sanders

    Linda,

I am writing to tell you that last night was an extraordinary and historic night for our political revolution.

In Florida, Andrew Gillum took on virtually the entire political and financial establishment of the state. No one thought he had a chance — not just at the start of the campaign, but as recently as a few weeks ago. But while his opponents had the money, Andrew had the people. He ran a grassroots campaign that forcefully spoke directly to the needs of working families, and last night Andrew won.

You are going to love Andrew Gillum. When I traveled to Florida to campaign for him recently, I left full of hope for progressives in that state. And he did not let us down.

Andrew has never backed down from a fight. And that includes beating the NRA and standing up against xenophobic politicians. He campaigned on ideas like Medicare for all, raising the minimum wage, investments in sustainable energy, and making sure the wealthiest corporations pay their fair share. He will be a governor who represents all the people, and not just the 1 percent.

The truth is, everywhere progressives are running, progressives are winning. It was not just Andrew Gillum who won last night, but both progressive candidates we endorsed in competitive state legislative primaries won as well. We are transforming the Democratic Party — like we saw last weekend when the DNC voted overwhelmingly to eliminate superdelegate votes in the presidential nominating process — and we are transforming the nation.

    That is the political revolution.

Election Day is right around the corner, and Andrew Gillum starts at a financial disadvantage once again. So it’s important we stand with him today, especially when he spent almost everything he raised to win a primary against two well-financed opponents. So I have to ask:

Can you split a very important $3 donation between Andrew Gillum’s campaign and my work supporting and rallying for progressive candidates like Andrew all across the country? He needs our help. I would not ask if it wasn’t so important.

    DONATE $3

Andrew is running against Republican Congressman Ron DeSantis, who has the unwavering support of President Trump and admires him so much that he ran television ads showing his kids “building the wall” with toy blocks and giving another one of his children a “Make America Great Again” onesie.

That was the ad, and essentially his entire campaign was showing Republican primary voters how much he loves Trump and will fight for his agenda.

So for that reason alone, it is critical that we beat Ron DeSantis in this race.

But it is just as important that we send an unmistakable message that the way to beat Donald Trump and his agenda in places like Florida is by running on progressive policies and electing candidates who will represent all of us, and not just the billionaire class.

Andrew needs our help to get it done. I hope that you will support him.

Last night was a tremendous night for our political revolution. But winning primaries is not enough. We have to win in November as well.

  3. Last night, we shocked the political world. We made history, and I am humbled and proud to be your Democratic nominee to become Florida’s next governor.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. This has been a hard-fought battle, but we took our message to every corner of Florida and we did something no one thought possible.

We can achieve anything when we all come together. And that’s what my campaign has been all about. But apparently, my opponent has decided the petty put-down, shake-down tactics of Donald Trump are more effective for him. He used a deliberate racial epithet when describing the choice in governors Floridians have.

I won’t stand for it, Linda. I’m running for governor to build our state up after eight years of stymied progress and divisive politics in Tallahassee. The kind of name-calling my opponent has resorted to won’t stop me, and it certainly will not stop the movement we have built.

I’m ready for a fight in November. But right now, we need to come together once again so we have the resources to elect me as Florida’s first black governor. Can I count on you to chip in $5 or more right now to me and the Collective PAC to show our opponent that he can’t bring us down?

Collective PAC was created for moments like this. Together we can win this race in Florida and support Black progressives all over the country.

We have many battles ahead of us from now until Election Day in November. And it’s clear my opponent will resort to the lowest-lows as a way of fanning up his base and getting Twitter shout-outs from Donald Trump.

When we come together and reject hate in all of its forms, when we stay focused on doing what is right for all people, I know there is nothing stopping us. No egomaniac can take away our ability to inspire change.

Chip in $5 or more to help me inspire that change in Florida.

    Let’s bring it home,

    Andrew Gillum

  4. Linda – there’s yet another headline about Racist Ron DeSantis, and it’s too vulgar for us to even spell out.

A major donor for Ron DeSantis actually called President Obama a “F—- MUSLIM N—-”. This is absolutely deplorable and exactly why we must come together to help Andrew Gillum win on November 6th. Rush a donation of $10 to the Collective PAC right now.

To say the least, it’s been a disturbing start for DeSantis’s campaign since the general election started. In fact, every single week since winning the nomination, Racist Ron has had one controversy after the other:

On Fox News, Ron DeSantis said Andrew Gillum would “monkey this up” if he’s elected the next governor of Florida — a not-at-all subtle racial epithet
DeSantis ran a Tea Party Facebook group whose members regularly made racist posts
An Orlando-area GOP official shared a blatantly racist meme claiming Andrew Gillum wanted African-Americans to be “paid back” because of slavery
The Washington Post and Miami New Times reported that DeSantis had spoken four times at events hosted by a racist who claimed that African-Americans owe their freedom to white people
On September 14th, the Miami Herald reported a disgraced state legislator who resigned after using racial slurs and threatened a colleague was blocked by the DeSantis campaign from co-chairing a fundraising event

Make no mistake about it: Racist Ron DeSantis is running on a racially-charged, divisive, bigoted platform. He is fanning the flames of Donald Trump’s base to turn against Andrew Gillum and a progressive future for Florida.

It’s on all of us, right now, to help Andrew win in November to put a decisive victory for inclusion and progress over racist, regressive politics. Make a $10 contribution right now to send a message that hate has no place in Florida’s Governor’s Mansion.

Donald Trump’s politics have had a horrific and deplorable impact on our country. And it’s clear that in Florida and all across the country, the bigotry will only continue until we put a decisive end to it by electing Black progressives who will champion progress.

It isn’t enough to only elect Democrats, Linda. We must send leaders who truly represent who we are and where we come from. That’s why Andrew Gillum is the leader we need to be the next governor of Florida.

There will certainly be many battles ahead of us. And by the looks of it, Ron DeSantis’s campaign will stop at nothing to bring shame to the state of the GOP. But if we all come together at moments like this, we can achieve so much.

Let’s rise against the hate of Racist Ron DeSantis. Let’s send Andrew Gillum to become the next governor of Florida. Chip in $10 or more to help us bring a win for Andrew on November 6th.

  5. … when you thought Racist Ron DeSantis couldn’t go any lower…

That’s the latest headline from the Tampa Bay Times. Really.

We emailed you last week about Racist Ron’s mega-donor tweeting out a disgusting obscenity about President Obama. And while DeSantis says he rejects his donor’s remarks, apparently he’s not offended enough to refuse his money?

    That’s outrageous.

We’re calling on Ron DeSantis to refuse donations from all racists. That’s why we need you to add your name with ours to demand DeSantis return the donation.

Let’s be clear: if Ron DeSantis rejects racism, he needs to put his money where his mouth is (or at least the money given by a bigot). It’s that simple.

But apparently, when you’re as desperate as he is to win the seat for governor, there’s no check not worth cashing. Racist Ron might be bought and paid for by racist mega-donors, but we have the advantage of a massive grassroots movement to stop him.

That’s why it’s time for action: add your name to demand Ron DeSantis return the donation made by a racist.
