Millions of animals’ lives wasted

This 28 March 2015 video says about itself:

Hidden Camera Exposes Criminal Animal Abuse at Chicken Slaughterhouse

New hidden-camera video from inside Maple Lodge Farms—Canada’s biggest poultry producer—reveals disgusting cruelty to animals, including workers violently slamming birds upside down into metal shackles and breaking their wings and legs, chickens cut open while still conscious and breathing, and animals arriving at the slaughterhouse frozen solid after they were trucked through freezing weather.

Take action here.

Some estimates say about half of all human food is wasted.

And that does not even take into account the billions of lives of animals, wasted already even before they might become food.

Translated from Dutch Vroege Vogels radio today:

Every year, 81 million animals are slaughtered in the Netherlands at a premature age, [Dutch pro-animals organisation] Wakker Dier reports after research. According to the organization, farmers, because of the high price pressure, quickly choose premature deaths for animals that are no longer profitable. “Because of the capitalism in the supermarket business, livestock husbandry has become so penny-pinching that animal lives are no longer worth anything”, said a Wakker Dier spokesperson.

Millions butchered

Each year 34 million egg laying hens are slaughtered when they start molting, because they would lay slightly fewer eggs afterwards. In addition, 39 million roosters are gassed annually because they are male and therefore can not lay eggs. They also grow too slowly for meat production. Meat chicks, cows, pigs, goats, sheep and rabbits are also killed prematurely.

Wakker Dier put together figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics and the National Service for the Enterprising Netherlands. The animals which die annually by fires or are killed due to culling during animal disease epidemics have been left out.

So, 81 million animals’ lives annually, not counting fire deaths and culling during epidemics. Only in the Netherlands, not a really big country. I would not be surprised if that would mean many billions all over the world.

If anti-Semites/Islamophobes posing as being ‘pro-animals’ would start fighting this shame instead of exclusively fighting Jewish kosher/Islamic halal food, small minorities in most countries, then the world would be a lot better place.
