Israeli cartoonist sacked for ‘Orwellian’ Netanyahu cartoon

Avi Katz' Orwell-Netanyahu cartoon

Translated from Dutch NOS TV today:

Cartoonist fired for pig image of Netanyahu

The Israeli cartoonist Avi Katz has been fired because of a drawing in which he depicts Prime Minister Netanyahu and other members of the Likud Party as pigs. At the top of the cartoon is George Orwell‘s famous phrase from Animal Farm: “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”.

The cartoon appeared in the weekly journal Jerusalem Report and is a reference to the decision of the Israeli parliament last week to legally establish that Israel is a Jewish nation state.

Among other things, it stipulates that Hebrew exclusively becomes the official language. From now on Arabic is a language with a special status. The Arab minority and other critics in Israel call the law discriminatory and racist. Arab Israelis thus feel relegated to second-class citizenship.

Katz made the drawing modeling it on a selfie by the Likud deputy Oren Chasan, who after the adoption of the law took pictures with Netanyahu and other Likud politicians.

Animal Farm was written during the Second World War and published in 1945. It describes a revolution on a farm, where people are chased away. The pigs seize power whereby life gradually becomes harder for the other animals.

NATALIE PORTMAN SLAMS ‘RACIST’ ISRAELI LAW Jerusalem-born actress Natalie Portman slammed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial “nation-state law” formally recognizing the country as a Jewish state despite its large population of non-Jewish Arabs. “It’s racist and there’s nothing else to say about that”, Portman told the BBC. Israel’s Nation-State Law condemned by the TUC

TUC DELEGATES in Manchester yesterday waved Palestinian flags as they voted unanimously for Emergency Motion 4, ‘Cuts to UNWRA and the Nation-State Law.’ This condemns the Knesset vote on 19th July and also the decision by US President Trump to cut the UN Works and Relief Agency aid budget by $300 million.

The motion states: ‘Congress condemns the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) majority decision on 19 July 2018 to adopt the new “nation-state law”. ‘Congress shares the opposition expressed by a wide range of Israeli citizens, including Palestinians, to this law which institutionally discriminates against Palestinian citizens of Israel.

‘The passing of the law has led to demonstrations in Tel Aviv called by groups asserting that “we are all equal citizens – Arabs and Jews, women and men, Mizrahim, Ethiopians, those of us from the former USSR and members of the LGBTQ community”. ‘Opposition to the law has also been expressed by the distinguished conductor and activist Daniel Barenboim, a group of over 100 writers and artists, members of the Druze community and the Peace Now group.

‘Congress expresses its solidarity with all those seeking to oppose this law and calls on the General Council to make representations to the UK government and to the Israeli authorities. ‘Congress also condemns the 24 August 2018 decision by the Trump Administration to cut $300 million from the aid budget to the United Nations Works & Relief Agency (UNWRA) which is responsible for 5.4 million Palestinian refugees.
