Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Victory Interview With Cenk Uygur

27 June 2018

She will be the youngest woman elected to Congress! Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, and Michael Shure, hosts of The Young Turks, discuss.

“(CNN) Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Latina running her first campaign, ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York’s 14th congressional district, CNN projects, in the most shocking upset of a rollicking political season. Ocasio-Cortez, an activist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, won over voters in the minority-majority district with a ruthlessly efficient grassroots bid, even as Crowley — the fourth-ranked Democrat in the House — outraised her by a 10-to-1 margin [in money].

This was the first time in 14 years a Democrat has attempted [to] unseat Crowley, who chairs the Queens County Democrats. His defeat marks a potential sea change in party politics — a result with implications for Democrats nationwide that would recall, as optimistic progressives routinely noted during the campaign, former GOP [Republican] Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s loss to the insurgent, Tea Party-backed Dave Brat in June 2014.

“This is not an end, this is the beginning. This is the beginning because the message that we sent the world tonight is that it’s not OK to put donors before your community”, Ocasio-Cortez told roaring supporters on Tuesday night.”

Translated from Dutch NOS TV today:

Leftist 28-year-old woman commits “coup” in Democratic Party in the USA

At least the NOS puts ‘coup’ between snigger quotes. This is not a coup; it is a verdict by the electorate. Contrary to real coups, like General Pinochet‘s CIA-supported bloody putsch in Chile; a British general’s plan to overthrow the government violently if left-wing Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn would become Prime Minister; and the failed British Blairite Iraq war lovers’ plan for a coup inside the Labour party against Corbyn.

In the United States, the Democratic Party has been startled by the victory of a progressive outsider in crucial primaries for Congress. 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who worked in a cocktail bar a year ago, defeated Democratic heavyweight politician Joe Crowley.

This happened in primaries for the House of Representatives in a district in New York including part of the Bronx. Crowley is a prominent member of the House and was seen as the main candidate to succeed Nancy Pelosi, who leads the party in parliament.

Ocasio-Cortez’s budget to campaign was no match for Crowley’s. Crowley has been the deputy in the House for the 14th district in New York for almost two decades. Helped by a fanatical campaign on social media and a viral video, she gave the biggest surprise to Democratic primaries in over a decade, writes The New York Times. With a landslide victory (15,897 against 11,761 votes) she vanquished the 56-year-old establishment candidate.

Ocasio-Cortez helped two years ago in the campaign of Bernie Sanders, who lost to Hillary Clinton after a close fight in the presidential primaries. She therefore represents the extreme left wing of the party.

Oh dear, the ‘extreme’ label again for framing everyone who disagrees with so called ‘moderate‘ ‘centristpro-Big Business politics.

In her campaign, she dismissed Crowley as someone who is detached from society, while she is a ‘working class New Yorker’ who was born in a place where your fate is determined by your zip code. She blamed her rival for not even living in New York and sending his children to school in Washington.

In 2002, Crowley was one of a minority among Democratic members of Congress to vote for George W Bush’s Iraq war.

HE NEVER SAW HER COMING After the political earthquake in New York’s 14th Congressional District, this piece examines why Democratic incumbent Joe Crowley never saw defeat coming at the hands of progressive political star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. [The New York Times]

The mother of Ocasio-Cortez comes from Puerto Rico, her father from the Bronx. She stands up for minorities and workers who can hardly make ends meet. She recently traveled to Texas to protest against separating child migrants from their parents.

JEFF JOKES ABOUT CRYING KIDS. Attorney General Jeff Sessions made a speech Tuesday in which he cracked a joke about separating immigrant parents from their children. Of course, the conservative crowd laughed and applauded. For context, here are immigrant parents weeping as they describe being ripped away from their children. [HuffPost]

The NOS article continues:

As an outsider, she vehemently criticized her own party. He [Crowley] is said to take the working class votes for granted. …

According to the American news agency AP, Ocasio-Cortez’s victory is a cause for concern for the Democratic Party. The victory would reveal a gap between the more pragmatic wing of the party and the left-progressive wing. According to AP, it is clear that the party is still struggling with its identity in the Trump era. …

Trump saw three candidates win yesterday that he supported in the primaries. One of them was Mitt Romney, who had called Trump when he was a Republican candidate in the presidential elections ‘a fraud‘. Romney has since become a lot milder about Trump.

In a major political upset yesterday, Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won the Democratic Party primary for New York’s 14th Congressional District against incumbent Congressman Joe Crowley. As of this writing, Ocasio-Cortez had received roughly 58 percent of the votes cast in the primary and will face off against Republican candidate Anthony Pappas in the November election. She is likely to win since the Republican Party has a minor base of support in the district, which includes parts of the boroughs of Queens and the Bronx in New York City. The Republicans only gained 17 percent of the vote in the 2016 elections. Ocasio-Cortez’s victory reflects a significant leftward shift of workers and youth who are hostile to the Democratic Party establishment and seeking a way to oppose inequality and the attack on immigrant workers by the Trump administration. Ocasio-Cortez, who is of Puerto Rican descent, also called for assistance to Puerto Rico, which has remained devastated since Hurricane Maria. The 14th district is home to a large Puerto Rican population: here. See also here.

GOTHAM PRIMARY SHOCK In a huge upset, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) — seen as a future leader of the Democrats — lost his seat to progressive political newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28, in the 14th Congressional District. In Utah, Mitt Romney eased to victory in the GOP Senate primary, earning him a congratulatory tweet from President Donald Trump, who Mitt once described as “a phoney, a fraud”.
