According to Ingleby, he was not arrested because of drugs, but for the comments that the rapper made on the government. “He has been making music about drugs for years, as many other Turkish rappers do.” Ezhel also has many political texts in his music. “Eg, he rapped that there is no future in Turkey, that the newspapers are full of lies and that if someone writes the truth, then that person wil go to jail.”
If the rapper is found guilty, then he can get a prison sentence of five to ten years. Amnesty International calls for the release of Ezhel. On Twitter, the human rights organization writes that the arrest of the rapper is a violation of the freedom of expression.
In the Netherlands the rapper is popular among Turkish and Moroccan youths. In April, Ezhel gave his first performance in the Netherlands in TivoliVredenburg. The hashtag #FreeEzhel is used on social media to draw attention to Ezhel. There is also an online petition, which has now been signed more than 125,000 times.

TURKEY: Police attacked and detained 13 trade unionists in Istanbul on Monday as they demanded the reinstatement of those sacked under the country’s state of emergency.
It was the 68th vigil organised by the Public Workers Confederation (Kesk), with arrests taking place in the Bakirkoy and Kadikoy districts of the city.
More than 150,000 public-sector workers have been sacked in government purges since a failed coup attempt in 2016.

Kurdish singer from Germany jailed in Turkey
Musician Hozan Cane who was detained in Turkey 3 days ago for pariticating in HDP’s election campaign, has been jailed.
Kurdish musician Hozan Cane, a German citizen, was last week detained in Edirne, western Turkey, where she had participated in the election campaign of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP). Cane was stopped by the police while leaving the Enez district after the program.
The musician is facing the accusation of “membership to a terrorist organization”, citing a scene from the feature film “74th Genocide of Shengal”, in which Hozan Cane plays the main role and for which she has written the screenplay. In the film, which deals with the genocide of the Ezidis in Shengal by the so-called Islamic State in 2014, the musician carries a weapon in one scene.
Hozan Cane was transferred to Edirne Prison.
