Wheaton College Students Grapple With Evangelical Homophobia

Wheaton College, 30 miles outside of Chicago, might be a barometer for the GOP’s “real America”, the one where being gay is still a thing.

Located on a hill as if it were the centerpiece of the town, is known as the “Harvard of Evangelical colleges.”

LGBT students and alums come together to meet and to push the administration toward acceptance. These movements could have ramifications far beyond campus borders. Wheaton College may be a canary in the mine for gay acceptance in this other America.

The college’s PR person LaTonya Taylor when asked whether the college would affirm same-sex relationships, her answer was clear: “No.”

More US Muslims now support same-sex marriage than white evangelicals

A survey has revealed that the majority of Muslims in the US now support marriage equality.

More than 40,000 Americans from across the US were surveyed on social issues, revealing that all faiths have become more supportive of LGBT+ rights.

The Public Religion Research Institute’s 2017 American Values Atlas found that religious people have become more relaxed about marriage equality since The Supreme Court legalised same-sex marriage in 2015.

Now, a majority of religious groups support same-sex marriage.

A slim majority of Muslims, 51 per cent, support marriage equality, leaving white evangelical Christians as the only group who oppose it.

58 per cent of white evangelicals oppose same-sex marriage, alongside 53 per cent of Mormons and 63 per cent of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Overall, 61 per cent of Americans support equal marriage, according to the poll, with majority support in 44 of the 50 states. However, support was still under 50 per cent in Mississippi, Tennessee, West Virginia, Louisiana, and North Carolina.

A high school valedictorian who says his Southern Baptist parents ostracized him because he is gay is fulfilling his dream of going to college, thanks to an $80,000 GoFundMe campaign.

The owners of a Texas wedding venue rejected a gay couple, stating that marriage equality goes against God’s “plan.”
