AMSTERDAM — Human rights organization Amnesty International has honored former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick with its Ambassador of Conscience Award for 2018, lauding his peaceful protests against racial inequality. The former San Francisco 49ers star was handed the award at a ceremony Saturday in the Dutch capital by onetime teammate Eric Reid.

Amnesty International has awarded the Ambassador of Conscience Award in Amsterdam to American football player Colin Kaepernick. He knelt two years ago while the American national anthem played before a match, instead of standing. His silent protest against police brutality and discrimination has since been regularly emulated by football players, sometimes to the anger of US President Trump.

“Not only in the United States is Kaepernick a great example for his fight against discrimination and police violence, but also in the Netherlands and the rest of the world”, said Eduard Nazarski, director of Amnesty Netherlands. “He shows that with a seemingly simple gesture you can start a great movement.”

Amnesty awards the human rights prize every year to activists who, according to the organization, commit themselves in a special way to human rights. Earlier the prize went to Nelson Mandela, the Pakistani children’s rights activist Malala and singer Alicia Keys.

Amnesty Netherlands this year is fifty years old.
