Stop European Union ‘fake news’ witch-hunt, Dutch government says

This video from the USA says about itself:

Glenn Greenwald: Mainstream U.S. Media is Culpable of Disseminating Fake & Deceitful News on Russia

5 January 2017

We are joined by Glenn Greenwald, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and one of the founding editors of The Intercept. His latest article is headlined “WashPost Is Richly Rewarded for False News About Russia Threat While Public Is Deceived.” In it, he writes, “Any story that bolsters the prevailing D.C. orthodoxy on the Russia Threat, no matter how dubious, is spread far and wide. And then, as has happened so often, when the story turns out to be false or misleading, little or nothing is done to correct the deceitful effects.”

Translated from Dutch NOS TV today:

Ollongren now also wants to get rid of European watchdog against ‘fake news

Minister of the Interior Ollongren now also thinks that EUvsDisinfo should be disbanded. She says that the Dutch government will make a strong stand for this in the European Union.

EUvsDisinfo is the office of the European Commission that has to fight fake news. On Tuesday, the House of Representatives, despite a negative opinion from Ollongren, voted for a motion to disband it.

The Minister of the Interior is now walking back her rejection. She writes that the motion of the [left-wing opposition] Socialist Party and the [right-wing government party] VVD “in terms of considerations” is in line with the government’s views and that the cabinet will therefore implement it.

Independence of journalism

The House of Representatives stated on Tuesday that it is not up to government institutions to label expressions of the free press fake news. That happened to NPO [Public] Radio 1, daily De Gelderlander

and others.

Ollongren writes to the House that the independence of journalism must always be respected.

EUvsDisinfo violated that rule by uncritically copying propaganda by an Ukrainian nationalist lobby group; which objected to correct Dutch media reports saying eg, that extreme right groups influence Ukrainian policies.

To work for EUvsDisinfo you don’t need any qualifications.
