Oil giants facing more legal action

Oil giants Shell and Exxon Mobil are facing a new legal battle with residents of a province in the Netherlands.

Earthquakes, said to be caused by drilling for gas, have wrecked hundreds of homes.

The people of Groningen are demanding the government take more action to limit gas production.

Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen reports from Groningen.

Translated from Dutch NOS radio today:

‘Stress in the Groningen earthquake area leads to more deaths’

Gas extraction in Groningen does not only lead to damage to homes, but residents with multiple damage also face health complaints more often due to stress. If there will be no solution, five to nine people per year may die from the consequences.

Researchers Tom Postmes and Katherine Stroebe of the University of Groningen come to this conclusion. They write that in their final report published today on two years of health research in the earthquake area.

Anxiety and depression disorders

More than 85,000 people have multiple damage to their homes due to earthquakes. Fewer than half of them feel safe at home. Some 10,000 residents have stress-related health problems. These complaints are in some cases so big that they develop anxiety or depression disorders.

“It is a broad picture of complaints”, says Postmes in the NOS Radio 1 News. “People have symptoms of anxiety and depression disorders and physical complaints such as headaches, insomnia, palpitations and stomach problems.” According to the researchers, the symptoms are associated with an increased risk of death as a result of cardiovascular disease or by suicide. …

Furthermore, it turns out that 27 percent of people who have already reported damage do not do that in case of later damages because of negative experiences with previous claims handling. …

Figures, in 21 municipalities in Groningen:

• 410,000 Groningen people live in the earthquake damage area

• 170,000 Groningen people (including children) have damage to their homes

• 85,000 people have health problems

• In the period August 2012-January 2018: six quakes with a magnitude of 2 to 2.5

• a quake with magnitude 2.5 to 3 and a quake higher than 3, namely 3.4 in Zeerijp January 2018
