In 1941, German nazi occupiers arrested Amsterdam Jews, deporting them to Mauthausen death camp. In reaction to that, this is a leaflet in which the Communist Party of the Netherlands called for a general strike in protest. Its first lines were (translated):
Organize the protest strike in all businesses !!!
Fight unanimously against this terror !!!
Demand immediate freeing of the arrested Jews !!!
Organise self-defence in the businesses and neighbourhoods !!!
Solidarity with the heavily injured Jewish part of the working people !!!
Save the Jewish children from the nazi violence, hide them in your families !!!
On 25 and 26 February 1941, hundreds of thousands of workers went on strike, in Amsterdam and also in other places, like printers in Leiden and people in The Hague.
The German extreme right AfD party praises Adolf Hitler’s war crimes committing armed forces and wants to stop commemorations of Hitler’s mass murder of Jews.
In the same vein, the Dutch branch of the German Pegida racists now wants to disrupt the commemoration of the massive February 1941 workers’ strike against the nazi Holocaust.
Translated from Amsterdam local TV AT5:
The extreme right wants to march through the city on the day of the February strike
Thursday, December 07, 2017
The ultranationalist action group Pegida wants to march through the city on the same day as the February strike commemoration.
On 25 and 26 February 1941, at the initiative of the Communist Party of the Netherlands (CPN), the city came to a standstill. It was the only overt resistance to the persecution of the Jews during the war. The Germans fired their guns at the activists. Nine of them died during the strike and many more were sentenced to death later.
Every year on February 25 the February strike is commemorated at the Dock Worker monument on the Jonas Daniël Meijerplein. But next year [2018], the far-right Pegida movement, which came from Germany, also wants to take to the streets on that day. …
Pegida wants to gather at 13:00 on the Spui square and then ‘with a march’ to the Vondelpark.
Pegida claims om social media that the February 1941 strike was wrong because it was a leftist strike.
