Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon has resigned following allegations of past behaviour.
He said his behaviour may have “fallen short” of the standards expected by the UK military and said it was right that Parliament was now taking this issue seriously.
Dutch NOS TV reports tonight that Sir Michael Fallon, the Secretary of ‘Defence’ War in the British Conservative-Irish fundamentalist terrorist coalition government, has resigned.
He was named in one sexual harassment case involving a woman journalist. But suspicions are that this was just the tip of the iceberg which ultimately caused the resignation.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has quit amid allegations of “inappropriate behaviour.”
Mr Fallon is the first to resign Prime Minister Theresa May’s Tory government following a wave of sexual abuse claims in Westminster over recent days.
In his resignation letter, he said: “A number of allegations have surfaced about MPs in recent days, including some about my previous conduct.
“Many of these have been false but I accept in the past I have fallen below the high standards that we require of the armed forces that I have the honour to represent.
“I have reflected on my position and I am now resigning as defence secretary.”
He apologised earlier this week for repeatedly touching journalist Julia Hartley-Brewer‘s knee in 2002. And, although Ms Hartley-Brewer says now that “no-one was remotely upset or distressed,” she admitted that at the time she threatened to “punch him” if he did it again.
However friends of Mr Fallon’s have said that in recent months he would concede that “some of his flirtation has been inappropriate.”

Fallon’s resignation raises fundamental questions for this government, writes KEITH FLETT
ON JUNE 5 1963 the Tory secretary of state for war John Profumo resigned following a sex scandal.
Profumo (who was schooled at Harrow, an elite boarding school for boys, followed by Oxford University where he became a member of the Bullingdon Club) had had a brief affair with a 19-year-old model, Christine Keeler, in 1961 who had also been involved with a naval official from the Russian embassy.
At the height of the Cold War these things mattered.
Tory Prime Minister Harold Macmillan hung on until October and then used a health issue as cover to resign.
The Profumo affair had been known for a good while before his resignation and the minister had denied any wrongdoing to the Commons.
As early as March 28, Tony Benn wrote in his diary that he had a long talk with fellow Labour MP Dick Crossman about what he termed the “Profumo-Keeler” scandal.
Benn notes that Labour leader Harold Wilson had written to Macmillan warning that if Profumo was not removed from office, Labour would raise the matter in the Commons.
Benn’s view was clear: “I’m not in favour of private life scandals being used politically but it certainly makes the government look pretty hypocritical.”
Benn kept to his word as well. He refused to join a BBC discussion on the matter when Profumo eventually resigned, underlining that he didn’t think it was a useful thing to participate in.
Fifty-odd years on, Tory sex scandals are apparently of a different character but the result is much the same, including the hypocrisy.
The Tories are far from the only party to be implicated in such matters but there is, invariably, a specific character to a Tory scandal, underlining the difference between the traditional values they claim to have and what they actually do.
After Profumo’s resignation the political discussion broadened. Macmillan had clearly known the position but had done nothing about it.
Benn thought that the situation was such that Macmillan “must go” but he saw off Commons vote demanding immediate resignation and a departure in August 1963.
He did win a vote but he did not resign in August. Rather, he left in October using the short-term health issue as cover. A year later there was a Labour government and Harold Wilson was Prime Minister.
Michael Fallon, occupying the same ministerial position as Profumo — now renamed the secretary of state for defence — has resigned partly because it would appear he was unable to keep his hands to himself in the company of younger women.
Profumo left politics and worked as a volunteer raising funds for charity at Toynbee Hall in East London.
It was widely recognised that despite his Tory background and the scandal that had forced out of him political life, in the end he made a worthwhile contribution to society.
One wonders if the same will be said about Michael Fallon?
More broadly, as Benn noted in 1963 about Macmillan, the Fallon resignation raises fundamental questions about the future of the current Tory Prime Minister Theresa May.
Perhaps May knew about Fallon’s activities but only when these appeared in the public domain did anything happen.
Whether Tory MPs have now given May an ultimatum to depart and who might replace her is, of course, unknown.
In 1963 the old Etonian relic Lord Home returned from the Lords to become Tory leader. That simply underlined the bankruptcy of the Tory government of the time.
The Fallon affair belies something like the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci’s “morbid symptoms” of a capitalist crisis. Unlike 1963, however, the “new” may be born rather more quickly than the 14 months it took back then in the form of a Jeremy Corbyn premiership.

I did not attach any significance to Mr. Moore’s behavior towards me and I did not respond to any of Mr. Moore’s flirtatious behavior for two reasons: First, I had a boyfriend. Second, even if I had not had a boyfriend, I was not interested in having a dating or sexual relationship with a man twice my age.”

> “I turned 16 on Nov. 14, 1977. About a month later, I received my yearbook from Southside High School, where I had spent my freshman and sophomore years. I happened to bring my yearbook to work with me to the restaurant on Dec. 22, 1977. I put it down at the end of the counter. Mr. Moore happened to notice it and asked if he could write in my yearbook. I felt flattered and I said ‘yes.’ He wrote in my yearbook as follows:

> “I trusted Mr. Moore. He was the district attorney. I thought that he was simply doing something nice by offering to drive me home. I did not want to wait outside in the cold so I agreed. I wanted to call my boyfriend, but this was before cellphones and I had no way to contact him. My home was only about two and a half miles away. I planned to call my boyfriend after I got home to let him know that I had gotten a ride home and that there was no need for him to pick me up.”

> She offered memories still vivid all this time later, made so by what was about to come in her narrative.

> “Mr. Moore was wearing brown hush puppies on his feet. He drove a two-door car. I believe that it was an old car, but I do not recall the model. I got into his car in the passenger seat. He began driving. I thought he would get on the highway, but instead he drove to the back of the restaurant. I was not immediately alarmed as there was an exit from the back of the restaurant to the street, and he could drive from there to my house without getting on the highway. However, instead of driving to the street, he stopped the car and parked his car in between the Dumpster and the back of the restaurant, where there were no lights. The area was dark and deserted. I was alarmed and I immediately asked him what he was doing.

> “Instead of answering my question, Mr. Moore reached over and began groping me, putting his hands on my breasts. I tried to open my car door to leave, but he reached over and locked it so I could not get out. I tried fighting him off, while yelling at him to stop, but instead of stopping he began squeezing my neck, attempting to force my head onto his crotch. I continued to struggle. I was determined that I would not allow him to force me to have sex with him. I was terrified. He was also trying to pull my shirt off. I thought that he was going to rape me. I was twisting and struggling and begging him to stop. I had tears running down my face.
>
> “At some point he gave up. He then looked at me and said, ‘You are a child. I am the district attorney of Etowah County. If you tell anyone about this, no one will believe you.’ He finally allowed me to open the car door and I either fell out or he pushed me out. I was on the ground as he pulled out of the parking area behind the restaurant. The passenger door was still open as he burned rubber pulling away, leaving me lying there on the cold concrete in the dark.”
>
> She sounded as if she were still chilled, as if some part of her were still there.
>
> “I got up and tried to pull myself together. I was making my way to the front of the restaurant when my boyfriend arrived. It was late and it was dark. I did not say anything to him as to what had occurred, as he had a violent temper and I was afraid that he would do something that would get him into trouble. When I got home I went to my room. The following morning my neck was black and blue and purple. In the days following I covered the bruising on my neck with makeup. I did not tell anyone about what had happened. I was scared. I felt that if I told anyone, Mr. Moore would do something to me or my family. I decided to keep what happened to myself.
>
> “The day after Mr. Moore assaulted me I called the restaurant and quit my job. I never went there again. About two years later I told my younger sister what Mr. Moore did to me. About four years ago I told my mother what happened. Before I married my husband, John, I told him what Mr. Moore had done to me.”
>
> She added, “My husband and I supported Donald Trump for president. This has nothing to do with Republicans or Democrats. It has everything to do with Mr. Moore’s sexual assault when I was a teenager.”
>
> She seemed to perceive no irony at all in supporting Trump, who had famously bragged that as a celebrity he could grope women with impunity. But being as blind to such things as most Trump supporters did not make her any less credible. You had only to hear the hurt from 40 years ago become unmistakable in her voice.
>
> “I thought that I was Mr. Moore’s only victim,” she went on. “I would probably have taken what Mr. Moore did to me to my grave, had it not been for the courage of four other women that were willing to speak out about their experiences with Mr. Moore. Their courage has inspired me to overcome my fear.”
>
> She had repeatedly dabbed her eyes. Her lips had trembled. But she had kept on and at the end sounded stronger for having spoken up.
>
> “Mr. Moore attacked me when I was a child. I did nothing to deserve his sexual attack. I was frightened by his position and his power. I am coming forward to let Mr. Moore know that he no longer has any power over me and I no longer live in fear of him.”
>
> Her attorney said Young was willing to offer this account under oath before a Senate committee. Exhibit A would surely be that high school yearbook that she set on the counter at the Olde Hickory House and he signed four decades ago.
>
> “It has her name on it,” her attorney noted, pointing to the tiny gold letters spelling out Beverly Young from long before she married.
>
> Had she been even a day shy of her 16th birthday instead of a few days past it when the alleged assault took place, she could also be offering her account under oath before a grand jury.
>
> Under Section 15-3-5 of the Alabama Code, offenses “having no limitation” include “any sex offense involving a victim under 16 years of age, regardless of whether it involves force or serious physical injury or death.”
>
> And that seems to mean that Moore could be prosecuted for allegedly enticing a 14-year-old to his home for sexual purposes, no matter how much time has passed, even if it was long before a 14-year-old could be enticed with a computer.
>
> The office of the present Etowah County district attorney did not respond to a query about the case. Nor did the Etowah County sheriff’s office. Both have worked cold case homicides. Why not work a cold case sex crime allegedly involving a child and a person who had solemnly sworn to uphold the law, so help him God?
>
> An investigation could begin by asking the accuser to describe the house where she says Moore took her and compare that to where he was living at the time. She has said it was in a wooded area. A photo taken around that time show him chopping wood outside the house with trees surrounding him.
>
> Justice would seem to demand that if Moore is guilty, he go to prison as Musso did when there was no actual 14-year-old at all.
>
> Meanwhile, Moore better hope that Beverly Nelson Young’s long-ago hot-tempered boyfriend doesn’t hear about all this and decide to settle things belatedly as she feared he might back then, the Alabama way.
