Filipino survivor blames Grenfell Tower fire on gas piping system

A Filipino who survived last week’s deadly fire in London’s Grenfell Tower said building administrators committed possible violations of Britain’s safety code.

From daily The Morning Star in Britain:

Labour: Oversight must not mean cuts

Thursday 20th July 2017

SHADOW fire minister Chris Williamson warned against cuts to fire inspector numbers as the government announced the establishment of a new inspectorate yesterday.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd explained her plans for a new independent overseer for fire and rescue authorities in England to the Commons yesterday as part of the government’s fire reform programme.

She said that it would be combined with inspectors of the police service to form a new HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services.

Mr Williamson warned however that the statement lacked clarity and said ministers must tell the public what extra resources will be provided.

He said if the statement was a “cloak for cuts to existing fire and rescue inspectors and overstretching the inspectors of the police services, it will be strongly opposed.

“The police and the fire service both need expert and thorough inspection, and the public will be right to demand that they have it.

“Labour will oppose any cuts to the inspection regimes under the guise of efficiency and savings.”
