Donald Trump’s daughter exploits Indonesian workers

Guardian Investigation of Ivanka Trump Factory in Indonesia Reveals Worker Abuse, Deplorably Low Pay

18 July 2017

A new investigation by the Guardian has revealed workplace abuse, grueling production targets and deplorably low pay at an Indonesian factory that makes clothing for Ivanka Trump’s clothing label. Many of the female workers at the factory in West Java say the pay is so low, they live in constant debt and can’t afford to live with their own children. In June, Democracy Now! spoke with the journalist who broke the story, Krithika Varagur, when she joined us from Indonesia to describe what she uncovered.

Ivanka Trump is shutting down her namesake fashion brand.

EX-ETHICS CHIEF REVEALS “DISTURBING” IVANKA EMAILS Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and adviser, was conducting government business from a private email account before she was employed by the government, according to records getting new attention this week. Walter Shaub, former head of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, highlighted two messages uncovered by the nonpartisan watchdog group American Oversight. One of the messages Shaub shared on Twitter appeared to show Ivanka Trump conducting business with Education Secretary Betsy DeVos almost a month before she had an official role. [HuffPost]

  1. So the White House announced that this week is “Made in America” week–except that a top advisor to, and daughter of the President, Ivanka Trump makes absolutely none of the products on her fashion line in the United States.1

But even worse is that Ivanka–who has made herself out to be the White House’s leading advocate for women with her signature push for a meager paid parental leave policy2–has her brand’s products made exclusively in foreign sweatshops where abuse, dangerous conditions, criminally low pay, and child labor are the norm, according to a bombshell investigative report by the Washington Post.3

Top brands like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus have already removed Ivanka Trump merchandise from their shelves, but at least one big one, Macy’s, still remains.4 But Macy’s responds to public outrage: it dropped Donald Trump merchandise after he called Mexicans “rapists.”5 If thousands cause another outcry with this latest news, Macy’s will drop Ivanka Trump–dealing a huge blow on her falsely-crafted image as an advocate for women. Will you sign the petition?

Tell Macy’s: Stop promoting the Trump White House and remove Ivanka Trump clothing from your stores.

Ivanka Trump has demonstrated over and over that her advocacy for women excludes poor women, often women of color. She has no credibility when she says improving women’s lives is “my life’s mission.”6 The report includes interviews with several women who make her clothing abroad–revealing the abuse they endure in factories or the meager pay that allows some of them to travel back home to see their children only once a month.

Yet she holds a powerful position in economic policy under an administration that claims “America first.” This latest revelation should help discredit her push for harmful policies she claims will help all women. If Macy’s drops her brand, it’s a public rejection of her sweatshop-promoting business–and her fake reputation as a leading voice for women and their families.

Will you tell Macy’s to drop Ivanka Trump merchandise from its stores?
