Brazilian prosecutors filed corruption charges against President Michel Temer on Monday, a step toward possibly making him the country’s first serving leader to face a criminal trial.

Brazil: Temer charged with accepting £9m in bribes

Embattled leader could face impeachment

BRAZIL’S attorney-general has charged President Michel Temer with taking multi-million-pound bribes — driving the unpopular right-winger closer to impeachment.

Rodrigo Janot submitted the corruption charge against the president and his aide Rodrigo Rocha Loures to the Supreme Federal Court on Monday.

The court will now decide whether to refer the case to the lower house of Congress which may suspend Mr Temer for up to 180 days while it considers impeachment.

Mr Temer was charged in connection with receiving bribes in return for resolving tax issues for the world’s biggest meat-packing giant JBS.

He is alleged to have of received a total of £9 million from JBS over nine months.

Former JBS chairman Joesley Batista also made a recording of a conversation with Mr Temer in March which suggests that the president solicited £120,000 in hush money for jailed speaker Eduardo Cunha.

“The circumstances of this meeting [with Batista] — at night and without any register in the official schedule of the president of the republic — reveal the intent of not leaving traces of the criminal actions already taken,” wrote the attorney-general.

Mr Cunha, a member of Mr Temer’s PMDB party, threatened to spill the beans on endemic corruption among Brazilian politicians when he was stripped of his Congress seat and immunity from prosecution last September.

In a cruel twist of irony, it was Mr Cunha who led the “legislative coup” that brought then vice-president Mr Temer to power in last August when his predecessor Dilma Rousseff was impeached.

Meanwhile, the Federal Police recommended separate charges against Mr Temer for obstruction of justice.

Earlier, the president tried to give the impression of stability as he ratified new legislation, saying: “Nothing will destroy us. Not me and not our ministers.”
But Mr Temer has seen his pro-austerity cabinet gutted by resignations of ministers implicated in a massive corruption scandal involving state oil company Petrobras.

BRAZILIAN unions led a general strike yesterday over the corruption-riddled governments attacks on pensions and workplace rights.

The major CUT union federation — an ally of the Workers Party of ousted president Dilma Rousseff — was at the forefront of the stoppages, protests and roadblocks across the country.

A previous general strike in late April brought much of Brazil to a halt.

On Thursday, the Supreme Federal Court sent formal corruption charges against Mr Temer to the Chamber of Deputies — the lower house of Congress — for consideration.

They relate to taped conversations of the unelected president soliciting hush money for jailed chamber speaker Eduardo Cunha from meatpacking magnate Joesley Batista.

If two-thirds of MPs vote in favour of the charges, Mr Temer will be suspended for up to six months while they consider his impeachment — the fate Ms Rousseff suffered last August.
