Magic money tree yields 1bn for DUP

Tories find extra cash to secure majority after election failure
THE TORIES have located a “magic money tree” to secure their hold on power through a billion-pound pact with the ultra-conservative Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Labour grassroots campaign Momentum said yesterday.
DUP leader Arlene Foster said the deal — negotiated after the Tories lost their slim Commons majority in the general election — included £1 billion of extra funding for Northern Ireland over the next two years as well as “new flexibilities” on almost £500 million previously committed to the six counties.
Downing Street rejected calls for Scotland and Wales to receive a similar funding boost through the Barnett formula, the mechanism used to distribute Treasury funds to the devolved nations.
A Momentum spokesperson tweeted: “So the magic money tree does exist, but only to bribe the anti-abortion, anti-gay rights DUP into saving the Tories’ skin.
“Let’s not mince our words. The Tories have literally bribed their way into government.”
The “magic money tree” was a mantra in Tory attacks on Labour’s spending plans during the election campaign.
Scottish and Welsh leaders also reacted furiously to the deal announced yesterday.
Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones branded it “outrageous” and a “straight bung.”
He added: “Only last week we were told that the priority was to ‘build a more united country, strengthening the social, economic and cultural bonds between England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.’
“This deal flies in the face of that commitment and further weakens the UK, and as currently drafted, all but kills the idea of fair funding for the nations and regions.”
SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford and Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon described the agreement as “grubby.”
Mr Blackford added that it was “the first big test” for Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson and her new MPs.
Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale said: “If Ms Davidson has any influence in Downing Street at all, she will be demanding extra cash to reverse the spending cuts her government has inflicted on Scotland, aided and abetted by the SNP.”
Scottish STUC general secretary Grahame Smith pointed out that the government has always “pleaded poverty” as an excuse for not funding public services adequately.
“The question now becomes: What extra money will be found for health and education across the rest of the UK? It is not only Northern Ireland that needs or deserves a cash injection,” he added.
This satiric music video from Britain is a parody of the song Come on Eileen, by Dexys Midnight Runners.
The parody is called Brexys Midnight Runners – “Come On Arlene” in which Arlene alludes to DUP leader Arlene Foster.

Poor old IRA
It’s been twenty years since Troubles ceased
But we’ve only gone and threatened the peace
Everyone cried, “What the fuck?”
And who’d blame them?Good Friday (Good Friday)Agreement (Agreement)
Lies in tatters on the floor
Along with the
Barnett, Barnett, Barnett formula
And all it took was a bribe of a billion quidCome on, Arlene
Come form a government with me
At this moment, I need all your seats
You and the Dup, come on and prop us up
Nice and cosy
Ah come on, ArleneCome on, Arlene, the IRA
Can live to fight another day

Rich pickings for May’s allies
Tuesday 27th June 2017
THERESA MAY’S shabby arrangement with the Democratic Unionist Party reveals starkly that her election slogan “strong and stable in the national interest” translates into “wobbly and dependent on the Tory Party interest.”
The Prime Minister has been taken to the cleaners by the DUP whose demand that the £1 billion ransom — plus enhanced “flexibility” on how a previously allocated £500 million is spent — be payable within two years provides graphic testimony to her government’s long-term survival prospects.
First Secretary of State Damian Green pretends that waving a bag of swag will persuade Sinn Fein to drop its opposition to Arlene Foster’s return as Northern Ireland first minister, reminding the republican party that the deadline to agree a devolved administration is this Thursday.
According to the Good Friday Agreement, failure to meet this deadline could usher in direct rule from London or further elections in the six counties.
Although the DUP-Tory dirty deal provides for no DUP role in direct rule, the dependence of May’s government on Foster’s Orange army cannot be imagined away.
The Tory government’s already less than substantive neutrality is now shot to hell. It has no credibility.
Why should Sinn Fein jump at its command, help Foster back into office and, in so doing, assist May?
The Tory-DUP accommodation has outraged all other parties in the Westminster Parliament, in the Scottish and Welsh governments and in the English regions.
Whenever demands are raised for government expenditure on urgent needs, the Tories sneer that there is no “magic money tree.”
May used that very phrase to answer a nurse asking why NHS salaries could not be increased.
Yet it is now clear that this mythical tree can dispense billion-pound windfalls for political bribery that aren’t available to meet essential workers’ acute needs.
Both Tories and DUP claim that their deal will enable the May government to deliver on last year’s EU referendum result, but the issue of Britain leaving the EU is under no immediate threat.
Labour under Jeremy Corbyn, the only possible alternative government, has stressed that the vote to leave must be respected.
So what May and Foster have in mind is a parliamentary majority to support a particular basis for leaving, stressing continuation of the Tories’ EU-backed policies of cutting public expenditure and intensifying the capitalist austerity agenda set in train by the David Cameron-led 2010-2016 governments.
Foster will expect to bask in the adulation of senior citizens in Britain as well as in Northern Ireland because of DUP insistence on including retention of universal provision of winter fuel payments and the triple lock for state pension upgrades, but May’s minority government could never have pushed through her manifesto pledges to ditch these guarantees.
There is far less than meets the eye in these pensioner-friendly commitments designed to dazzle Foster’s working-class supporters.
DUP voters, who pride themselves on their attachment to the union with Britain, may well feel some unease over what looks suspiciously like a divide-and-rule tactic so typical of British colonialism.
The magic money tree is cascading cash to tackle deprivation and fund infrastructure, ultra-fast broadband, health and education projects — but only in Northern Ireland.
The price of this is 10 DUP MPs strolling into the lobbies with the Tories to put the boot into the British working class.
As Gerry Adams warned again yesterday, history shows that such intrigues rarely end well for Northern Ireland unionists.

Royals now receive £82m to go around the world waving
THE Queen is to receive a £6 million income boost from the public purse, bringing the money the royals sponge off the state to £82.2m.
The bonus was announced the day before the government’s own Social Mobility Commission warned that the divide between rich and poor in Britain is set to become even wider.
The Queen’s new pocket money comes out of the Sovereign Grant which is paid by the Treasury and will increase by 8 per cent in 2018/19.
The grant is based on the profits of the Crown Estate portfolio, which includes much of London’s West End. The estate posted a £24.7m rise in profits to £328.8m in 2016/17 — of which the royals will now get a 25 per cent cut, up from 15 per cent, to pay for the refurbishment of Buckingham Palace.
Keeper of the Privy Purse Sir Alan Reid, equated last year’s grant to 65p per person annually.
But Republic, which campaigns for an elected head of state, said that once other costs were included, the annual bill for the monarchy was nearer £345m and that attempts to justify the amount are insulting.
CEO Graham Smith said: “This arrangement is unsustainable, the way the grant is worked out means the taxpayer keeps throwing more money at the royals while public services are being cut.
“To add insult to injury the palace engages in dishonesty and spin to justify this raid on public funds, making the disgraceful claim that they cost just a few pence per person.”
While the royals enjoy yet another pay rise at the taxpayers’ expense, the Social Mobility Commission has warned that Britain risks becoming even more divided as two decades of successive government have failed to reduce the gap between the “haves and havenots.”
The report, which assessed social mobility progress at each key stage in people’s lives, found that under current levels of progress, it will take 80 years before the higher education participation gap between rich and poor students is closed.
It also found that the income/ wealth divide has become “more acute” between 1997 and 2017, with the poorest earning just over £10 a week more and richest earning £300 a week more.
“Whole tracts of Britain” feel left behind, said commission chairman Alan Milburn, who added: “The public mood is sour, sometimes angry. Whole communities feel the benefits of globalisation have passed them by.”
