Vienna and Berlin slam US sanctions
RUSSIA: Austria and Germany issued a joint condemnation of new US sanctions on Moscow yesterday.
Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern and German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said sanctions passed by the US Senate on Wednesday, targeting businesses which deal with key sectors of Russia’s economy, were “illegal and extraterritorial,” since they would punish European firms who pipe Russian natural gas to Europe.

GERMANY has declared that it will not co-operate with the US over any sanctions on Russia that simultaneously target European countries.
German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel rejected the sanctions Bill passed by a 98-2 vote of the US Senate on Thursday.
Democrat Bernie Sanders and Republican Rand Paul were the only dissenters.
The sanctions Bill requires firms based in the EU to cease co-operation on a new gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea from Russia — leaving Europe dependent on expensive US imports.
“We will in no way accept an extraterritorial application of these US sanctions against European companies,” Mr Gabriel said.
The foreign minister said the decision was only carried out to “serve the interests of US industry policies.”
The EU has warned of retaliation if the US pushes ahead without addressing its concerns.
Whether the sanctions become a reality now rests with US President Donald Trump who can choose to accept or veto the measure.
