The Saudi arms trader Adnan Khashoggi, a wealthy businessman who was famous for his extravagant lifestyle, died in London at the age of 82. He had been suffering from Alzheimer’s for a while.
Khashoggi acquired his assets in the 1960s and 70s as an intermediary in global arms trade. One of his clients was Lockheed, the aircraft builder of which [Dutch] Prince Bernhard took bribes in the 1970s. Khashoggi himself was also controversial, partly because of his role in the Iran-Contra scandal and his ties with the Philippine dictator Marcos.
In the 1980’s Khashoggi was a billionaire and he began to spend his money, including big jet set parties in his villa in Marbella that lasted for days. On his fiftieth birthday he gave a party with guests like Brooke Shields and Sean Connery. Outside, refrigerator trucks with champagne were parked. One of his brothers gave him a lion cub as a gift …
In 1987 he was still on cover of Time magazine, but after that his business empire collapsed and he was charged with fraud. He has never been convicted. …
He married twice, but also had eleven concubines whom he housed in his many villas and yachts.
