Pentagon and Defense Contractor Corruption and the War Profiteering Problem
21 June 2013
Michael Shank, Director of Foreign Policy at the Friends Committee on National Legislation and Adjunct Professor at George Mason University‘s School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, discusses the latest Pentagon corruption scandal in which Boeing overbilled the Defense Department by nearly $14 million.
Shank discusses the pervasiveness of corruption, waste, fraud and abuse within the Pentagon, defense contractors, and US military personnel operating within Afghanistan and Iraq and the hundreds of millions of American taxpayer dollars that have been stolen. Shank calls for a Special Inspector General for Overseas Contingency Operations and a permanent office for independent oversight, lauding the oversight work of the Special Inspectors General for Afghanistan and Iraq Reconstruction.
Translated from Dutch NOS TV:
Ex-minister Hillen covered up details of corruption case
Today, 08:10
CDA
conservative Christian Democrat
politician Hans Hillen when he was Minister of Defense
euphemism for war
has not told the Dutch Parliament everything about a major corruption case involving the purchase of military cars. “If I would report to the Chamber all details about such matters, then I would not have time to run armed forces,” he said to NRC daily.
Chief suspect in the case is Jacques H., who for years was boss of the defense cars fleet. He is suspected of, eg, accepting dealers’ bribes. After years of investigation, the case will be brought to court for the first time next week.
