A man shouted racist slurs at two young Muslim women on a train before fatally stabbing two passengers who intervened to help them by cutting their throats.

The appalling incident happened on a crowded commuter Metro train in Portland, Oregon, on Friday night.

Police said the man was shouting and raving, in particular directing ‘anti-Muslim‘ abuse at two young women, one of whom was wearing a hijab.

It included telling them to “get off the bus” because he “doesn’t like Muslims” because they “don’t pay taxes“, according to one witness.

It is believed passengers including three men intervened to defend the women, when the man began stabbing them at random.

One man died at the scene after the train pulled into Hollywood station at about 5pm despite the best efforts of emergency services who were called to the scene.

A further two men were taken to hospital where another died. The third victim is not suffering from life-threatening injuries.

The two men who died had their throats cut, one witness said.

Police said the suspect ran from the scene but was quickly found by officers and arrested.

He is now in custody and has also suffered minor injuries.

He was described as a white male aged between 20 to 40-years-old.

“This suspect was on the train and he was yelling and ranting and raving, a lot of different things, including what would be characterised as hate speech or bias language,” Sgt. Pete Simpson said.

“In the midst of his ranting and raving, some people approached him and appeared to try to intervene with his behavior and some of the people he was yelling at and they were attacked viciously by the suspect.” …

The account was backed by Evelin Hernandez, 38, who was on the train.

She told Oregon Live the man began making racist remarks to the young women.

“He said, ‘Get off the bus, and get out of the country because you don’t pay taxes here,’ [he said he] doesn’t like Muslims, they’re criminals,” Ms Hernandez added.

Police said the two Muslim women who may have been targeted by the man had left the scene by the time police arrived and appealed for them to come forward.

Friday marked the beginning of Ramadan – the holy month when Muslims endure daily fasting and focus on prayer and charitable acts.

The shocking double killing in Portland would appear to be the latest in a line of violent incidents directed at Muslims.

The Centre for American Islamic Relations (CAIR) has blamed President Donald Trump’s rhetoric towards Muslims for inflaming racial tensions.

The CAIR urged Trump to denounce Islamophobia.

The mother of one of the two women says to a local newspaper that the man shouted that all Muslims should be killed. “He said that they have been killing Christians for years,” said the mother.
