Intense Practicing on Lance-tailed Manakin Display Perch – May 15, 2017

Male Lance-tailed Manakins work in cooperative alpha-beta pairs to court females during the breeding season, whereby the beta male effectively foregoes reproduction while aiding their dominant partners in attracting mates. Despite this selfless act, beta males are not guaranteed territory inheritance by cooperation with an alpha male. Instead, they likely gain courtship display skills by engaging in such cooperation, by which to become the superior male in a different, subsequent pairing.
